Why do my headlights move about.

Hi guys.
Whenever I switch on my headlights they alter their angle up and down before they settle at the same point but they're not self levelling (are they) so what's going on.

Is that completely true? I though halogens weren't SL yet they still rise up to the straight ahead position when switched on - although if not SL I've no idea why?

Xenons are self levelling - the law (in the UK at least) to avoid dazzling other road users, these will move while you're driving. Halogen are adjusted in the cabin (a switch next to the headlight switch), these will rest at the bottom position when switched off and then raise to your set position when the lights are switched on. Halogen are so poor that you want them as high as possible.

Getting back to the original question, regardless of xenon or halogen the process that is taking place is that the lights are going through a cycling process to check the adjustment motors and reset them to where they were manually set using the knurled adjuster on the rear of the light.

It has nothing to do with self levlling on xenons or manual levelling on halogens, which then moves beams to the required driving level.
