Why didn't M's come as Auto?

Not a flaw as such... but again its the control being lost thats the problem.

To some it wouldnt matter i guess....

I've just looked at bmwfans.com and the weight of the Z4M gearbox weighs 43.5kgs whereas the gearbox (DCT?) for the E92 M3 weighs 57kgs

If I hear anyone else able-bodied justify an Auto over a manual because of the "effort" required in town/city driving or because its "less tiring" I think I will scream!!

If you find that tiring I suggest you join a gym....urgently!

Someone said above that the auto won't hit the limiter... In manual shift and sport on mine it will redline. What it won't let you do is over-rev,
The redline area is something different than the revlimiter. The revlimiter also is the mechanism that you won't over-rev, so that's also not possible regardless auto or manual.

As said, it is a personal choice.
Not from a performance point of view. A conventional automatic is definately slower. Not only because the shifts might be slower (or not, depends how good a shifter you are), but also because of the loss in the torque converter (on times where lockup hasnt engaged yet), the power hungry hydraulic pump and high inertia from the torque converter mass. So you will lose performance at every speed and acceleration.
The only personal choice part is what you find more comfortable etc.
As for dual or single clutch semi automatics (they resemble from a technical point of view a manual box more than an automatic): it varies greatly on the design. It already was commented that the bmw SMG might not be the best (or fastest) gearbox, but all F1 gearboxes are also an SMG style gearbox (no dual clutches I think) and they shift in 30ms. So it varies greatly.

When i hear clutch munchers say " you're just not as connected to your car with an auto " & discuss their toe's & heel's like my wife & daughter do BLAHHHHH i have an overwhelming urge to drink 4 pints of stella & a bottle of red then launch myself down the nearest staircase ears first

Well it is nice and easy for the commute side of things but it also lets you concentrate on the driving when the pace is picked up. I took a minute and a half offmy best Ring lap time last year(was in S2000).Now I know that the increased power of the Z will have a contributed to that but also the super performance of the auto box.

I can't remember Jenson Button ever saying these auto boxes are ok but I wish Mclaren would let me have a manual.

Ultimateley its about enjoying our cars and if its having a manual or auto that ticks the boxes for you then its down to personal choice. Why didn't the Z4M have an auto as an option, probably because they felt the auto box at that time wouldn't give the performance theyd want.

But you can over-rev on an accidental bad downshift with a manual , say from 5th into 2nd gear rather than 5th to 4th. :o

Don't throw yourself down the stairs mrwilks, I love your passion for the auto & as most have said its purely personal taste & I like your contribution to the site...I would miss you :)

Crickey, this is still a red hot thread then!

Reading through I conclude its whatever you get enjoyment out of. Some people manual, some SMG, some auto. The M was famously created and developed by engineers who wanted to get rid of driver aids (runflats, electronic steering etc). Maybe manual selection was just part of their shopping list.

Quite right inkey , there is no definitive yes or no as to which is best .
As individuals we choose what suits ourselves & for me the auto in a 911, a 645 & now the Z is all the comfort, performance & above all driver/owner pleasure that i need . plainly there are many who prefer manual or maybe need the exercise so stick with the 3 pedal's  heyho but don,t then try pi55ing down my back & telling me its raining 8)

How is electric steering assist a driver aid compared to the hydraulic system the z4m has?
Electric steering is lighter and more fuel efficient, hydraulic is probably more reliable and can have a better feel.

Yes it lightens the steering and is probably more fuel efficient and can [debatable] be a better feel.

I'd call all three of those things driving aids as they aid driving.

Maybe somebody here knows why those same engineers decided not to fit electronic steering and runflats to the ///M. You may find your answer in that response.

My point was that the swapped electric steering assist for hydraulic assist. Both are driving aids, so you cant say (on this point) that they wanted to get rid of driving aids. They swapped one for another.
They probably swapped for hydraulic for the feel and reliability. fuel consumption is not a real priority for an all out sportscar (electric power steering is a development purely out of fuel economy)

I'm not sure what your point is GuidoK. Isn't that what I said? All I added was that they can be seen as aids in its purest sense - ie non digital, more analogue - and my guess is that the engineers of BMW did too.

You wrote that getting rid of electric steering assist was getting rid of drivers aids. When you getting rid of a drivers aid (electric steering) and replacing it with another driving aid (hydraulic steering) you're not getting rid of driving aids on a nett scale ;); you're just replacing.

Okay. That makes sense.

I'm not saying people shouldn't have an Auto/DCT's, I'm just saying please don't use tiredness in town as a justification unless you are over 65 or physically impaired in some way! :)
