Why did BMW remove the dipstick from the N52?

i thought i would top up my oil - as it was on 1 bar but without a dipstick its not the easiest task in the world to get right!

I filled up about 0.5L as the manual says when the light comes on its meant to be 1L. Went for a drive to get it up to engine tempterature - press the dash button and eventually it finally displays the oil level as...... 1 bar.. thought to myself that cant be right, tried again after i had stopped for some shopping - still 1 bar! Thought when i get home maybe i'll add a little more - so as i park up tried it one more time - and low and behold it is finally reading it correctly as 3/4 full!

With a dipstick this task would have taken me under a minute to accomplish!

Only add 1 litre when OBC gives the instruction. I like the engine without dipstick (engine oil level check without opening the bonnet and getting hands dirty :D ).

I prefer the dipstick...

what happens when the sensor fails... oops running on no oil :headbang: and who's fault would that be :?

My zed is always under BMW warranty. If the sensor fails, the engine blows up. New engine please, BMW UK. :)

I'd rather have a dipstick.... I'd hate to do a oil change as id need the exact amount of oil!

And how will I tell if the sensor has messed up if it tells me my oil is fine all the time yet I could be running bare minimum!?

While i do like the oil sensor as a nice backup for ill user maintenance after coming from from a few jap high compression revving engine i have got into a habbit of checking and toping up my oil levels atleast once a month - which makes it very difficuly without an oil dipstick!

I was also plannig on doing my own oil change inbetween the service periods - however i may give it a miss without the ease of a dipstick.

it doesn't have a dipstick?

I guess it's a shared dipstick - the engine designer who said "hey guys, I've got an idea..."

A dealer wont use the dipstick to measure how much oil to put in, they will always put in the amount of litres the specification indicates, which is what I would do.

A physical dipstick is still only an indication not always accurate.

One benefit of the electronic dipstick is you can check your oil when you are driving along and think about it, I check mine a couple of times a week on average, if the sensor packed up I would know about it long before it ran out of oil.

Still prefer a dipstick, espcly as the 3.0 tends to use a little oil every so often
a far easier way to top up for me/and most ppl i know are not loking the idea of doing away with dpstk when they replace current bmw's!!

progress,indeed.lol :headbang:

Gannet - don't be silly it's a BMW the sensor won't fail......

Got into my Zed the other day and said to my wife:
'This car hasn't got a Dip Stick'
'Yes it has,' she said looking at me, 'YOU!'
And then the fight started.

I do agree the electronic one is nice - and if it has a failure it is "meant" to tell you, but how much extra would it cost for them to have had a dipstick aswell?
