Why are Alpinas a similar price to MRoadsters?

As a prospective buyer i am slightly bemused as to why these two models are in the same general ballpark price wise (in spite of the Alpinas generally being an older car)? Also which of these cars will likely hold its value better long term?

Alpina,s are rarer & have a lower tax bracket plus the brand appeals to some buyers over the M 8)
Personally i would go M but it is only a personal choice & not based on whether one is better than the other :?

I also think the Alpina had a following in Alpina circles - where they get bought as a second car, The M does not have the same following in MPower circles.

The only way to decide is to drive both and decide which you prefer- there is no right answer to this question. I looked at both an preferred the M - you may prefer the Alpina.

I really like the M's. But if Alpina had made a coupe I would certainly pick it over the M.

Alpina's are a totally different car to the ///M. I drove both before going for the Alpina as IMO it's an easier car to live with as a daily drive. They do hold their value well (as shown by recent examples) as there are only 170-odd in RHD (and only 7 in red IIRC) so have a far greater rarity than ///M

Just out of interest, what did you find different and why the Alpina?

Alpina is less raw, and smoother through its acceleration. I found it less 'crashy' although that may have just been the individual cars. Also, for me the difference in power just wasn't that noticeable - they both get to 60 in 5-ish seconds, so if I wanted to thrash it the capability is there. Finally, the Alpina pedigree and rarity swung it for me.

I would recommend Stuart's comparison as a good read, mine was a comparison with a few test drives; he's lived with both cars.

167 in RHD and 9 in red (6 lux, 3 std)

I agree with Mark's comments regarding drivability - I also prefer the styling and interior of the Alpina but, again, that's a personal choice

NB From comments made by members from mainland Europe on the Alpina Register, it's only in the UK that the Alpina RS and the Z4M are in roughly the same ballpark price-wise, it appears that across the channel the Alpinas are much more expensive than the Z4M - presumably this is down to rarity as there were only 206 LHD models made and a number of those went to Japan (I know Japan is a RHD country but, apparently, all the RHD models came to the UK)

The Alpina is a very limited run hand crafted car. The ///M is just a standard BMW with a few performance bits added.

As such the Alpina will always hold value better than the ///M.

Tax, drivability, brand cache, destruction of the ///M sport badge with application to any mundane model, etc. just swing it further to the Alpina.

If I wanted a collector's car, I would have taken the Alpina.

I wanted the better driver's car (LSD etc) and the later shape so chose the M.

Interesting comments chaps.

Must say the lack of an LSD is the biggest potential downside to the Alpina. However the car is primarily for my wife and i suspect she will prefer the more GT nature of the Alpina.

A limited slip diff is about £1300 fitted (from wobblewings posts) and from my own very personal experience it would be a good mod to do!

That is ok Stuart, I was just grateful to be at the back so I did not get sprayed by all that mud and gravel
