Who taught you to drive??

No not from SD but Kansas actually. My father who was a career Army Office was stationed in Rapid City as the National Guard Cmd for the Western Half of the State when I was in the 7th to 9th grades.
 
Cheers guys, yep I meant age able to drive unaccompanied, still pretty cool to be able to go out at 14 though. South Dakota - 10 people per square mile, is that right? I need to leave our crowded island :(

That's an average across the state. NJ is average over 6000 people/sq mile. Highest in the US.

As for driving, the old man taught me followed by formal classes in High School. Permit at age 15 (had to have a parent in passenger seat) and license on my 16th birthday. Never been in an accident. Only ever got one speeding ticket and two traffic tickets and those were all after I turned 21. And the two traffic tickets were crap - one I went around a car using the shoulder that was waiting for a break in traffic to turn left into a neighborhood in Illinois - guess they enforce that law there - bastards. Other one was a U turn here in Jersey - the freaking no U turn sign was three cars behind me in the median and I didn't see it. The stupid cop was right behind me and I did it on a green arrow. I can't believe he didn't just give me a warning - I was new to town - what a jerk. And the speeding ticket was in TX on a road (414 for those in the Dallas/Ft Worth area) that used to be 70mph and they had just changed it to 55 when they were building the new raceway - I didn't notice the new signs and had the cruise set at 74. That guy was nice, but still gave me a ticket - bastard. :D
 
I purchased and old Mini for £50 12 months before I could get a licence. My dad ( a rocket engineer and designer - true) helped me renovate and tune it. I would take it to a surfaced but unopened dual carriageway near my home and drive for hours, practised all the formal procedures. On my birthday I had a hard days training with my dad on real roads. Passed the test at the first available date.

I was so scared to drive in real traffic....

Been a petrol head ever since

Kansas has strict guidelines now....you must have money to get a license. I do believe that is the only criterion nowadays to obtain a DL. :oops: :cry:
