I've had an oil leak for ages and only recently found out it was the rocker cover gasket which needed replacing.

Ordered the parts from bmw and set about replacing it this morning. Dead easy to do and hugely satisfying when it all went without a hitch and no more oil leak that I can see.

I work with 1.5 and 1.6 litre engines in work so always see them stripped back daily, but the 3.0 is twice the size and very impressive.

Old gasket was at the end of it's life. It was so brittle that it snapped on removal. Well worth doing for the 40 quid I cost for the gaskets, sealant and silicone grease.

Good work....shame about the grotty engine bay

Stuff gets dirty when you work on your own cars ;)

I cleaned it afterwards to get rid of oil residue. Will post a pic tomorrow to suit your ocd :D

Stuff gets dirty when you use it more like.

I'm debating whether to keep mine FBMWSH or maybe move to indy based FSH with some DIY, as it's 10 years/100k old, I fancy getting stuck in as it's not an awkward machine to work on compared to what I'm used to...

I don't know about the UK, but in the Netherlands, a well maintained, FBMWSH, Original Dutch(non import) car has a much higher value than indy maintained cars. The Insurance even sees the car as a "classic" car, 10 y/o 90k miles, FBMSH with a few technical, high quality upgrades. Full coverage for the price of insuring a VW lupo :-)
That said, the valve cover gasket is a know failing item on the M54. Swapped mine as well and just DIY'-ed a new strut top mount, meyle HD stabilizer linkages, built and installed new goodridge brake lines and installed a new rotor hat on the performance friction brake disk(cracked a bell). Things I can't DIY or left for the main dealer and price wise, it's not that much more expensive than having it done at an indy.
