Who had a private number plate on their Zed?

My wife's name is Dorne and years ago I bought her D1ORNE and spaced it like that.....during one month she got no less than five letters from some plod who kept passing her on the M40 near Stokenchurch, warning her about the spacing. Since I wasn't sure if he was serious or just wanted a date, I eventually regularised it for a year but then reverted (using the correct plate just for MoT). She's never been stopped in nearly ten years. My PNL 910 has an extra space in the middle but again, been like that nearly nine years with no comment.
The police give you a load of tosh about ANPR cameras not being able to read if spacing is incorrect, but its exactly that - tosh. I know because I know people on the job, and if you think about it, ALL foreign cars with non-UK plates would otherwise escape detection/surveillance.
I know some people thinks its all dire but frankly I've got better things to worry about than the very slim chance of some bored traffic cop pulling me over for such a dangerous offence..... :roll:

Yep. Three times (in my 5er). Both cars have short plates but the spacing is perfectly legal. The short plates make it look like they're spaced incorrectly.... now, I carry a set of standard plates in the 5er now so I can show plod...

I think that plates to match a name etc are good. I wouldnt buy a plate to match a car, would mean losing the plate when you move on to a different car.
I can transfer it in PA. I don't know about other states but I've got to believe that they can be moved to a new car. For example there is a man in the area that I live who has a plate that reads "FAT SO". I understand he did that so his wife with would not want to drive his expensive MB sports car. I can't imagine someone else being forced to take a personalized plate with the purchase of a car.cjp2k said:

In the US the rules vary by state.
In California, it costs $40 to get the plate, if no one else in the state has taken it already, then an additional $30(?) per year. And yes, you can keep the plate if you sell the car, or let it go.
You also have to explain the meaning of the plate, and of course certain work/letter combinations can be denied....

I should point out that the plates that I have aren't actually personalised... I bought them because they hide the age of the car and because they are both two-digit registration numbers C10 and C11... make nice short plates!! The letters have absolutely no relevance to me - or the car! 
I wish our plate system was like this
