White Smoke with Blue Tinge

Hi All

The past couple of days i've been enjoying the warm weather. However, on start up, I'm getting plenty of white smoke with a faint blue tinge from the exhaust.

If I let the car idle, I get more smoke and if I rev the engine I also sporadically get smoke

Have checked the coolant colour and residue and all okay. Will take it to the indy tomorrow to get it checked out.

Car is a 2.0 Z4 2006 with 68,000 miles on the clock

The in car thermostat/temp gage always reads okay

Does like to drink a bit of oil. Approx 1 litre in 1700 miles

Any thoughts?

Maybe you've elected a new pope? :D

Sorry, in a daft mood and nothing sensible to offer you.

I vote valve stem seals :D
PMP cars is apparently the place to get them done for a reasonable price. Its on my list!

I’m going to check the oil separator tomorrow.

What sort of cost is a Valve stem seals replacement?

Good call. Worth checking the CCV.
I replaced the CCV on mine a couple of months ago and it was in surprisingly good condition at 100K miles. Worthwhile preventative maintenance though.

Valve stem seal replacement on the 4 pot motor is 390 all in. PMP are over in Nuneaton.

So just had the call from the garage.

CCV is absolutely fine and theres no point in replacing it.

He's currently doing an oil change and putting a slightly thicker grade to see the results. If this doesn't work then it is likely the Valve stem seals so i'm fully prepared for a trip to Nuneaton

As long as he doesn't go mad and throw 50 or 60 weight in there, that could be worth a shot.
You should still stay within the manufacturers recommendation, so 5w40 at the most.

The engine only has 68K on it. Its not time for 'high milage' oil yet

I believe BMW state the consumption of the N46 can be up to 1 litre per 1000 miles and still be considered within spec. They are heavy drinkers sometimes.

It did have 5w30 in so he's going for 5w40 and we'll monitor to see if things improve

They do love to drink oil but i'm sure theres a small leak somewhere causing the blue/white smoke. £390 all in is a pretty good price and it'll give peace of mind once its done

Just means the Alloy refurb will have to be put on hold for a month or so
