whistling noise from engine.

sounds like it's coming onto boost (obviously not, but it's the same noise as i had in my focus st). can only hear it when the roofs down and i'm just cruising along with a light touch of the accelerator.

split pipe? or just a normal characteristic of the engine?

I get this too, only at a certain throttle position. I've just put it down to induction noise.

I get a whistling noise too! It's very noticeable under hard acceleration and mostly from 3.5-7k RPM. I don't mind it as it sounds like I have a turbo spooling up. :evil:

Hi

Mine does the same, it's like a turbo whistle when I set off, up to about 20 miles a hour

I've had 4 z4s now, all 3 ltr and this is the only one that has done it

It's the only auto I've had so don't know if it's something to do with that ???

mines a manual 3.0. as said, must just be the induction noise.

Has anyone of you performed a hand over hand check of the rubber intake hose?

This noise seems to crop up when there is a crack or spit in the hose which is a common issue on older engines. I had the same issue on the Roadster. Inspected the hose, found a crack. Replaced hose, whistle noise gone.
Normally the crack seems to be mainly on the smaller section of the intake hose.

Just something to check.

My 3 litre does the same, will check the intake hose for any cracks, I have to say I might even miss the sound...

i'd concur with Shipkiller - in my experience its more likely to be an induction leak somewhere...doesn't need turbo to exaggerate it, had same thing on a VTEC engine with leaky manifold....
