Whistling noise at <>2900rpm

I wonder if anyone could diagnose this....? My Coupe (N52) has started to make a whistling noise at about 2900 rpm. It is very consistent, it does it whilst increasing revs, decreasing revs and holding it at steady revs.

I only hear it with the window down.

I rocrded it on my iphone and you can hear the noise reasonably clearly with good speakers/headphones.

I don't seem to be able to upload the M4A file unfortunately.

I would prefer to hear that this is a cheap/easy fix.........
 
On my roadster it was a split in the airitake boot. The small part of the pipe. Worth checking rubber intake first.
I found mine by asking Wifey to quietly increase revs while I had my head under the bonnet.

The n52 doesn’t have the small rubber spur that splits on the m54 engines, I think others have had whistling oil filters due to collapsed paper elements-cheap enough to replace as a precautionary measure :thumbsup:

I’m assuming don’t have have the radio aux plugged in, switched on but not playing?

Id bet money on it being air intake related. I’d get the bonnet up and check the jubilees and look for splits.
Does it sound like it’s coming from the near side front?

I’ve seen people drill holes in the top of the air box to try and get a bit more induction howl :headbang: even the smallest hole makes a lot of noise.
 
When mine made a whistle it was due to a hole in the exhaust... this was on an aftermarket exhaust mind.

Might be worth a look over if you find nothing wrong with the air intake, if it is the exhaust you'll find a soot build up around the leak if one exists.

All good suggestions (less convinced about Roger Whittaker :? ) With the experiences described before was it just at a very narrow rev range that you heard the noise?

I'll get my head under the bonnet while someone revs it at the weekend.

I’m pretty sure there is a bit of a power surge from 2900 / 3000 upwards.

I’m just about to drive out to see some French monkeys as it happens so can report back.

I have a k&n and a ram air scoop fitted so can hear the induction roar a little more than standard. But as I say I’m sure it becomes noticeable at 2900 ish, and builds up and up until the redline. It sounds like an extra hole is just amplifying the noise.

There's no denying his talent but thank god my car doesn't sound like that!
 
There is 100% an increase of induction roar kit before 3000 revs. So imo it’s almost certainly a split or load on the intake hose somewhere.
