Whippy v stubby. Maybe there's a solution?

Well the title hardly needs an intro now does it.

Back in February when I bought Vall her E85, I noticed the whippy was significantly shorter than the one on my E89.
Until recently I had nothing to compare with to see if that was a standard E85 offering she had fitted.
Now however I've seen a couple of others and they seem the same length as my E89 one.
So where did hers come from?

Well, then I looked more closely at her daily 220D convertible and sure enough it's whippy is the same as the one on her E85.
It retains the true whippy character that the stumpy impostors can only dream enviously of, but brings it back to a slightly more balanced proportion.

The 220 goes back next month. I feel it may well be sporting a longer whippy, while my E89 revels in it's new-found, well-balanced individuality. 8)

In n years time, some (then) old duffer will come along and point out that car is worthless coz it hadn't got an OEM whippy!!

whats the difference in length? standard whippy is what, 30, 35cm, and a stubby is usually about 6-8cm?

whats this middle ground length?

What happened to electric aerials?
Were they just too much trouble and always sticking so people would rather not have a retractable one?
A modern version could possibly suit both camps.

Obsessing about the legnth of your whippy suggests s lack of confidence in said whippy - a visit to the GP might realise an even smaller solution, blue in colour

You just had to make me measure them didn't you!

Original is 40cm, the new 'must have' design is 28cm.

On the E89 technically you never need an external aerial..it could be all done with hidden aerials..

Hence the assertion that the whippy is a style icon..

Technically powered telescopic aerials are a bad compromise compared to no moving part multiple aerials optimised for each band..just like in fact those fitted to an E89

TV and radio reception where I live is rubbish, so whippy, stubby or semi-whippy were all cr*p!

But I always understood the FM aerial is in the rear bumper anyway, the one on the wing is for AM and who listens to AM any more?

I don't know about the E89 but E85/6 have a switching unit that seamlessly moves between the rear bumper aerial and the whippy depending on frequency and signal quality. So if you are in a strong signal area on FM you might get perfectly good reception without the whippy, but many other times you will need full whippy power. Long live the whippy
