Whippy or stubby

My radio can barely pick up 4 stations (currently have a stubby aerial) I’m considering switching to a whippy in the hope it may make a noticeable difference can anyone confirm please?

The primary FM aerial is located in the rear bumper and is the one the radio priositises for FM signal. When you start to lose signal it then switches to the whip/stubby aerial. It can also prioritise the whip/stubby instead of the boot aerial if you're in an area with certain wavelengths.

I fitted a stubby to mine and was curious when fitting it to see if I would get signal without either whip or stubby. Turns out (while sat on my driveway) I did get full signal on all my main stations.

Potentially some wiring has come loose, broken or got wet in either or both aerials (more likely in the bumper one)? Or potentially the amplifier attached to either aerial has gone bad.

If you're getting bad signal with a whippy then I would expect the same issues with a stubby.

Spot-on info from TheDan, loose/dirty connections in the rear bumper cable are possible particularly if the rear bumper has been off.

It has nothing to do with radio reception, it's all about good taste and style. Those with whippys have both. Nuff said and end of.

I will swap mine, one careful owner from new for a villa in the med but has to be with a decent size pool.

I don't want to start panic buying or bump up values of the whippy, but replacing the OEM whippy with alternative parts e.g. the common Peugeot or Chinese stubby is "a notifiable modification" failure to declare can invalidate insurance and bump up premiums.

Buy 'em whilst you can, after a blip in 2020 when rumours about the early scrapping of FM radio were debunked values are on up again!
