Whining Noise

I've also confirmed that the noise is from the fuel pump, now waiting for the new part to arrive from germany. obviously it'll be covered under warranty but with only 3k miles on the clock its a bit disappointing!

I have to smile about things like this, not being funny, but if the only issue with the car is a slight whine, think yourself lucky...

You can't really play down the annoyance of it until you've heard it though, it's loud enough to be embarrassing and its just not something a car should do. Fair play to anyone who gets it resolved I say, if BMW acknowledge it enough to issue a technical bulletin to change the pump to another model of pump, it can't be all that 'slight' :)

Your all lucky its the fuel pump and easily diagnosed, mine is somewhere in the bowels of the engine and sounds like an agitated wasp in a jamjar :x

Tim.

Trust me Transmat, of all the issues I've had and continue to have (loud rattling from crappy BMW exhaust flap that makes it sound like a Hyundai) a whine from the pump is minor, it really is. Sure, the affected are dissapointed, but it really is minor compared to the faults some of us have had. Have some patience, it will be sorted and lets hope thats all you have to tackle. Not complete transmission failures, cracked wheels, engine faults, turbo failures, injector failures, bearing failures, screen failures, roof rattles, knocking suspension and I could go on. Just trying to point out the fault is fairly minor. (thats not all my list, but I've had my fair share)

I just came on here to put a post up about exactly this as I'm also getting a whining noise from the rear of the car.

I did wonder if it might be the fuel pump, so now I've seen that others have the same, it gives me something to go on.

Need to book it into the dealer, but just haven't had a chance recently.

If they're anything like my dealer, they won't be surprised to see you. I think they must do a few. Hope it all gets sorted.

Mines all sorted now so I'm a happy bunny :)

The noise in itself is a minor issue, but the problem is the cost to solve the issue, circa £1300 which puts it in the same league as other fairly serious faults (more than the cost of 2 wheels for example). My cracked wheels didn't actually cause any problems but I knew it was there and needed it sorted, the same with the noise of the pump. The issue is further downstream when it comes to selling etc, you'd have to fix it or it is going to put many people off, hence fairly serious in my opinion. Also no one yet knows if the pumps making a noise are on their way to failing and if this will cause performance issues.

I'm just extremely grateful for both extended warranty and also bmw showing some leniency on this issue!

Good job. My pump is now in stock and is being fitted Monday and Tuesday.

I see that Real OEM site quotes $198 for a pump. So is it that big a job to replace.
Looking at the other body parts, looks as though the tank straddles the prop shaft. Perhaps this has to be removed to get at the inner side of tank where the pump is fitted.
So why didn't they design it so it screws in from the bottom of the tank!
Will have the car on a ramp in the next few days to change oil, so will have a look.

Well had a look, plate, exhaust and heat shield have to come off so time consuming job.

Reminds me of a friends Picaso. The pump failed on that. Required the exhaust to be removed in order to drop the tank.
And there was me having a look under the rear seat carpet for an access hatch to the tank, as on a Peugoet 106, no such luck, too logical that!

Well I've just booked mine in to have the whining checked and also the alarm checked as thats been going off randomly whenever there is a torrential downpour!
They're going to order the new fuel pump ahead of my appointment. I did mention that there was a revised part, so hopefully they order the right one...as because I need a loaner car, the first appointment isn't until 4th October. Don't want to have to go back a second time!!

Now that is a coincidence because I came on here to post about my alarm going off when it starts raining (as it just has) and found the thread about the whine (which the car also has)......bingo!

I'm starting to think that BMW repairs only last for a standard 18 months... :x

After having a new fuel pump fitted the whining noise has started up again - a tad louder and seemingly unaffected by how much fuel is in the tank (BTW - the 18 month whinge refers to how long my re-fitted rear lights lasted before they had to be renewed again).

I do have an extended warranty but with the £250 excess it isn't worth me going down that road. Does anyone out there know if the pump can be modified/lubricated etc to try and cure the noise? If it's a sealed unit then I guess I'll just have to keep the stereo turned up loud... :)
