Whine from rear

Now then.

Soon after having my rear springs replaced the Z is generating further concerns! There is a whine coming from the rear of the car. It doesnt appear to change in pitch between idle and accelerating but it could be that the engine noise drowns it out. I jumped out of the car tonight with the engine left running and it sounds very much like it is coming from just behind the driverside wheel arch. Does this sound like it could be the fuel pump? As the car was stationary I dont think it can be bearings or similar. Anything else it could be?

If it is fuel pump how much would I be looking at for a replacement?

I've read all 17 pages of results for the search of "fuel pump" and seen reference to change in fuel. I've filled up the last four times with Tesco super high octane stuff, previous to that I was using V-power for 2-3 months and before that morissons normal unleaded for a year. Maybe experimenting to find the best wasnt a great idea :|

The fuel pump can be noisy (I only seem to notice mine on warm days with less than a 1/4 tank), but unlike the E89's with direct injection and high pressure pumps, it's not a sign of impending failure or any particular fault, just some will whine and others don't.

Interesting, just started noticing a whine from exactly the same place - just behind my right shoulder.

But I can only hear mine at 2k rpm in 5th & 6th. The whine comes on when I apply pedal and goes when I don't at about 2k rpm. Clearly the fuel pump, but it is a tad annoying.

Ah see,

I have only just noticed this within the past few weeks. I am very picky with car noises and I would've noticed this before.

If doesn't matter on how much fuel I have in the tank either, seems to stay the same pitch and frequency of noise.

As said above, road speed and engine speed do not make any difference, though I can't hear it once over 30MPH but I think the road noise is probably drowning it out.

Also it can be heard both inside and outside of the car.. around about the O/S/R area. I have opened the fuel filler cap and tried to listen in there whilst the car is running and it does not seem any louder.

I have been doing some reading on this and it seems that it could be a common thing although there has not been any definitive answers.

Some more symptoms are slight hesitation upon acceleration, breathlessness at high RPM and hunting at idle... all of which I intermittently keep getting.

I am leaning towards a faulty fuel pump but I have no idea on the labour costs or part replacement costs etc..etc..
 
Not sure with the Zed but a whine from the rear of the car would indicate to me the diff. I would check the oil level in the first instance.

I would agree but it happens when stationary.
Also speed doesn't change the noise.
 
A whine from the back when stationery that is odd. Wonder if it is a slipping belt transmitting noise to the rear of the car.

I'd agree, but my E46 had a whining diff, but my whine is different pitch and occurs at specific rpm's whereas the diff whine is road-speed related. Not sure about the OP's noise of course, but if stationary can't be the diff either. :)
