Hi all
I am looking to buy a Z4 ,probably a 2009-10 model.............can anybody give me any guidance on which model / engine etc would be a good choice.....thanks

In that case you'd get a 23i (which is actually a 2 1/2 litre)or maybe even a 3.0i both 6 cylinders. If you went to the top of your bydget then you'll probably see some nice toys as well. The Msport package is nice(though some think it affects the ride).

Oh and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the Forum. Buy what you can afford to run - insurance can make the decision for you depending on your age and driving history (points etc).

20k should buy you a late\\M instead of an E89, with some money left over to significantly abuse the fuel tank for at least a month

Hi all.and thanks for your responses so far........
Can somebody explain what all the different model numbers relate to.ie what is an E89 etc.
Also with reference to the engine size can somebody give me an idea of true mpg
One more........are there any things to look out for which can be problematic.........I have heard that the roof rattles and squeaks...........

All info and help much appreciated!

Thanks

my E89 23i ( 2.5 ltr ) get 29 MPG including 5 mile town trip to work and back every day. Weekends on open road closer to 40mpg.

As anyone will tell you hit the floor with your right foot and you get about 10MPG! But that just fun.... :D

Don't be put off by reading about rattles. Test drive and you'll hear any noise. My roof doesn't make a sound. You can get one car that whines and groans but most don't.

The E89 is the metal retractable roof model, the E85 is the soft top roadster and the E86 is the coupe.

With the E85 en E86 being the old model and E89 is the model you're looping at the E and now F nummer are the model numbers BMW gives there models, while the 23i is an indication on what kinda engine is in the car :)

Read through the Forum and do lots of research - don't buy the first car you see (as I did - no regrets so far but....) there's lots of choice at your price level - lots of extras you might regret not having if you jump in too quick - colour and trim choice even wheels might make a difference to you. Take your time - take plenty of test rides to see which engine size/performance best suits and as already mentioned get some ideas of realistic running costs. The earlier cars are a little more hard core which some prefer - the newer model is more refined in ride - read what others say - there's lots of advice and experience on this forum. With your £20,000 ceiling you should do well and it will be worth it - good luck!

I've just picked up my Z after months of searching. It was always going to be 6 cylinder as they just sound luuurverrly and the 3.0 came in perfect.
It all depends on your priorities with that kind of budget? Is the look the most important? Is it speed? Is it rarity?
If it's looks, go for smaller engine and with max toys and the perfect colour.
Speed, well look for an M but my 3.0 is about perfect for me tbh.
Rarity, Alpina rare as rocking horse p** and not seen all that many green Zs.

I get between 30 and 35mpg out of mine so far with mix of town and motorway...well I would if I could stop putting my foot down just to hear the engine. (Not even sure if my radio works yet  )

Obviously take heed of what people on this forum say but when you get into the right car, I'm sure there won't be anyone who can talk you out of it!
