Which X5 to go for?

I'm currently looking at changing my wife's honda civic to X5. Having read through reviews and a bit of research, its recommeded to go for post 2007 models(E70). Also late 2007/08 models have better mileage and also reduced Co2 bringing the tax down significantly. Any ideas guys, My budget is around 30k. Dont want to give up my MR.
I know some of you have owned or own X5 and hoping to get some advice. I will be going for the 3.0lt diesel(no doubt about it).

Are you definitely set on getting the diesel (as per last sentence)?

If not I'd say that depending on weekly mileage the 4.8 would be worth a look too, hideous thirst but they're all really well specced and good value for money.

I defo want the diesel coz its going to be our family car and with a kid on its way, i cant see myself buying another thirsty car. I know the newer early-late 08 models came with 3.0sd spec which had 286 bhp with similar mpg and also CO2. I dont know how BMW do it but its great.

Can't really comment on the current model, but have run a 3.0 sport (petrol) from new in 2001. Amazing piece of kit with near 100k on the clock, rarely a problem (except door locks freeze). Still looks like new even after 9 years never garaged. Bullet prof build and quality of finish.

Been a perfect car for family, towing off road Jeeps and latterly university moving in an out runs. Great on road handling and suprising performance with car like qualities.

Thirsty at <20mpg for life of ownership, but been cheap to run. If you factor in depreciation for £44k to say £6k, no real maintenance, cheap insurance and only on her 3 set of tyres then actually cheaper to run than say 3 x £25k Mondeo estates or similar over the same period.

Won't buy another simply as my lifestyle is changing to 2 of us not a family of 4

If I got another it would def. be petrol and an LPG conversion for the best of both worlds.

Later model has lower car tax, earlier has the high rate. Check the cut of date as it is important.

my mate has a 3.0d msport X5, 2009 plate in metallic grey, awesome machine !

My mates got a 4.8 petrol and got it for a song as nobody wants them.... converted it to LPG and it now does more MPG than the 3lt diesel and sounds AWESOME  Pretty quick car for the size of it as well.....

Cost wise I assume you mean, as LPG is about 15% less efficient then petrol, with the diesel doing 35mpg and the 4.8 doing about 18-20.

Yes sorry pvr I meant in terms of cost rather than actual MPG. Its made me think of shopping the wife's car in and doing the same... his is a cracking car for the money in terms of kit etc.
