Dyson for the house and like others a Henry for the car, can't fault either

Saying that I have stripped it down a couple of times so cleaned up the internals. I think the biggest problem is that ones that break down have never cleaned / replaced the filters...

Agree with this 100%. I've had Dyson in the past but now Miele and the latter is a much better piece of kit.
I have a miele and an old dyson animal.... The dyson is still going strong, and the dyson is better at picking up the wifes endless supply of hair off the carpets where she blowdries and straightens!
But the miele is better for all around the house, especially on thick carpets.

I agree with the comments on dyson, although we have just a 15yr old one serviced and it really sucks now in a good way.
What I would suggest is there seems to be millions of dyson repair shops around now - everyone's machine now needing a service or filter replacement after 10 or so years of good running - but it's worth checking out the refurbed dysons, but I'd suggest that the older models are actually better built...

Unfortunately not a look that would suit me, I don't look Elfin enough. I have however considered wearing a hairnet around the house, can pop it on as soon as i get in from work to stop pesky hairs falling out everywhere (good thing I live alone).
I was put off from Dyson forever when one of the holiday homes I stayed had one, it just kept falling apart in my hands and it was so awfully plasticy everywhere.
Miele parts are expensive though (talking about the extendable tube and the end bit which do fail after a while). That is my only objection to them, but we use a demotion system - if one fails, it gets demoted as my office or garage vacuum
