Which Stubby??

Does a stubby loose any reception in comparison to the original?
Are they simple to fit?

Simple fit. Unscrew old aerial, screw in new one.

Some have reported poor reception... Mine works ok

I think the shorter it is, the worse the radio reception will be...

Just swapped back from Mangowalk to the whip. Reception with stubby was patchy/crackly and fancied the RC car look again.

I got a VW Sharon one from eBay.

I have noticed reduced radio reception when in the sticks.

I might look at the official BMW one.

The BMW version is pretty good, if not quite up to the standard of the whip, just to set your expectation - it is miles better than the Mangoealk, which many don't have an issue with, but was utterly useless where I live. Good choice
