Which soft top motor to use

Hi everyone, I’m a newbie. I just purchased a 2006 Z4 3.0 i. Everything works just fine except the top. It’s in manual mode. I need to replace the motor but won’t spend the $800 the dealer wants. I’m also warned not to buy anything cheap off eBay. You get what you pay for. I’m told the mustang motor works just fine and is much more cost effective. Can anybody tell me what year motor to get, part number, any info would certainly help me. Thanks.

Removal and relocation to the trunk/boot is a DIY job here is a good guide with pictures

The biggest problem is getting the nylon tie that retains the plastic can the motor and pump unit lives in to break so the unit can be lifted up and out of the well it lives in. Once out these motors if waterlogged can be brought back to life after soaking them in diesel. Repositioning in the trunk/boot is easy enough by securing the unit in the recess at the left back of the trunk/boot. Use the bracket behind the carpet to zip tie it there. Great access should it need attention in the future and it will never get drowned in the new position.
You should be able to revive your motor but could consider using the alternative you mention.

I used a roof motor from a Mini when mine died last year.
