Which Shocks are the best?

I have got a snapped rear spring (eilbach), I have ordered a like for like replacement. However, even though there appears to be nothing wrong with the shocks on the car I am wondering if it is worth changing these at the same time. I believe to replace them in the future involves removing the springs, so I'm saving doing a job twice, although this information has only come from reading posts on here so I might have got the wrong end of the stick.

I had a quick call to BMW to get a price for OEM, with all the bits they are looking for £324 (inc vat and delivery). I'm not really wanting to spend this kind of money replacing like for like just to save removing the springs in the future.

Although I do like keeping as much as possible OEM, does anyone have a suggestion for a shock that works better with Eibach springs around the same (or less :D ) money?

Thanks in advance

What’s the mileage on it - if it’s low mileage (below 40k) I wouldn’t bother.

If it’s closer to 80k then they’ll be well past their best and new ones will make the car feel completely different.

I’d also try one of the forum-friendly dealers as you’ll save a bit there too - Harry Fairbairn gets a few mentions, but there are others.

If you’re doing the rear shocks, remember the rear top mounts.

If you’re down south again, you can try out my Billy kit, has a real nice absorbing & composed thud.

Even if the shocks are lowish mileage, I would replace them.

Z4Ms are pretty hard on the dampers and 11+ year old stock units are going to be past their best.

Hi All,

The car has done 45k and I haven't noticed any problems with the shocks at all, in fact the spring is broken right at the bottom and sitting very comfortably where it was before it broke, so I haven't even noticed any problems here (but I'm not a racing driver!)

mmm-five, it was Harry Fairbain that gave me that price.

Mister T, I was thinking more that you had to remove the springs to change the shocks, so whilst the springs were off I would change the Shocks

Thanks Jembo, Are the top mounts part of the shocks? I have a feeling that was included in the price of the shocks.

Yorkie Z, I think it was the shocks and all related parts! TBH i didn't pay that much attention, I just assumed it was everything that I needed, now Jembo has mentioned top mounts I think it may have included those, but I will need to double check!

I had a rear snapped (eibach) I got a full set off D Sloane. Are you able to get a refund on the one you ordered?

Hi Truth,
I have ordered them but they haven't shipped, didn't you replace both back springs together?

Have a search on here for Plowy's posts about Bilstein B6 for the stock springs. He really loved the upgrade IIRC and got them pretty cheaply.

To be honest, I think that would work for me, I will see if I can cancel the ones I have ordered. I would prefer to change the pair, but the way mine has snapped and the milage it has covered I'm fairly sure that it wouldn't be a problem, plus I'm driving to Ireland next week so I would like to get it on if I could. You are fairly close to me then?

Met Shaun today to sort him a spring. Nice guy. Had a natter all things Z4m and could hardly concentrate on driving when looking at his car in the mirror when leaving! Sepang, when clean, really comes alive!

Good to meet you and enjoyed chatting too Mark and thanks for the spring, just in time for my tour of Ireland.

Both look great! Glad you got it sorted Shaun, with Truth's help.

Going to Ireland on business or pleasure? I'm looking at driving the WAW next year..
