Which service to book? Opinions needed.

Hi there all.

As some of you will know I bought a Z4 Coupe back in Feb off a forum member (Rally-Chris). So far excellent (apart from pesky ABS motor, but we move on), just flown through MOT with no advisories, and now the service indicator is showing around 5,000 miles until next inspection.

Trouble is I am having a difficult time working out which one that will be.

Last formal inspection was at 55,000 miles in Sep 2014, and was an inspection 2. This was completed by the previous owner but one (one before Rally-Chris). Itemised on the receipt included oil change, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, brake fluid, coolant flush and air con recharge. Also the full inspection.

Car is now on 81,000 miles. Since the above service the car has had 3 oil changes, 3 brake fluid changes, front and rear brake pads, suspension overall, water pump, gearbox oil, diff oil, battery and others, but no formal inspection. The spark plugs have also been changed by Rally-Chris since they weren't explicitly mentioned in the above service.

I've just ordered 8l of oil, oil filter, air filter and micro filter, and realised it might make sense to combine as part of a full service (I'll use up the 5,000 before the end of the year).

Any suggestions on what you would do? Inspection 1 or 2? Reason I ask is 30,000 miles seems quite long between the previous inspection 2 and an inspection 1, or does this sound right?

Thanks and regards.

BMW should have a service at least every 2 years min or mileage based So would you consider that the things done were services.

Curious whether there is any documentation that says every 2 years minimum? I don’t disagree per se, just try to work out why the mileage counter is still indicating 5,000 miles (after a good 4 years). Seems like some blithering idiot might have reset the service indicator at one of the oil changes?

I’m not all that concerned as it has had regular fluid changes (and definitely had spark plugs), just trying to get a consensus view on what to book it in for.

Sounds as if it's been looked after.

For any new owners I'd recommend as a minimum.... oil, oil filter, air filter and pollen filter.

Go to your local Indy and supply them with what you want in the car.

Get any codes looked at. Someone close will have Carly.

Get an alignment check too as that should probably be done yearly too.

Thanks chaps. I should say a 4 wheel alignment was done by me this year (and last year), it’s just the official “Inspection” that seems due.

Might just ask my Indy if they could knock the price down of their Inspection 2 on account it doesn’t need spark plugs and I can provide oil and filters.

Oil service is a minimum every two years regardless of mileage according to the service book.

Inspection services are approx every 26k

Oil services have been kept up to date, so that’s fine.

Servicing every 26k miles makes more sense according to trip computer. I plan on keeping it for a fair bit, so might just get the inspection 2 minus spark plugs done to make sure everything gets covered.

Thanks for help guys.

First off get your head around the service sequence then you can work out yourself where your car is at.
Generally speaking from new it should go (to follow bmw recommendation)
Oil service at 2yrs or 15k/16k
Ins1 2yrs 15k/16k
Oil service 2yrs 15k/16k
Ins2 2yrs 15k/16k
Oil service 2yrs 15k/16k

So Ins2 would normally come around every 50k/60k or 7/8 yrs

Also worth noting ins1 on non M Zs is little more than oil service anyway so looks good in the bookbut pretty much useless to the cars upkeep.

Your car already sounds over serviced so little to worry about.

As for what to do this time? Your regime is so far out of sync you either need to start a fresh with all items done or as I see it do a oil service with air filter too , then go ins 2 in a year or 5k/7k
