Which second hand Z4 for about 15k

Hi all,

I was hoping people could share what they would go for if they were to buy now an used one for about 15k. Maybe also share things to look out for.

There is such a wide selection of Z4s, with varying specifications over the years, trims, facelifts , recalls, known issues etc it is a bit overwhelming for a newbie to absorb and make an informed decision.

This will be my first two seater and I don't need it to be the fastest one, just fun to drive , good to look at and not ridiculous to run and maintain.

Should I be looking at 30i or 28i ? Or is the 20i enough ?
How important is getting a pre or post 2013 (facelift one?)
Has BWM sorted out small issues making the post facelift ones a bit more reliable ?
Has anything changed inside over the years?
Are there extras or options you consider a must-have?
Preferred trim?

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Hi, your budget will stretch to a newer car than the 30i (they stopped in 2011) the 18i, 20i & 28i all have the same 2litre turbo engine with the output altered by software (mapping) changes.
Think facelift cars came out in late 2013-there's not a huge difference with an uprated roof mechanism & headlights/indicator changes being the most obvious.
Most people rate heated m-sport seats & wind deflectors as very desirable with satnav being a bit of a marmite thing.
It's easy to get the 20i mapped higher than the 28i by the way

This might give some answers too (or make more questions)

Id defo go with a late lci n20 2.0 turbo if you can. As Smart bear has said they can be a very fast car for very little outlay!

The early 2.36 pots are gutless as hell in comparison and rubbish on fuel too but do have that 6 pot noise if that's what your after.

Have you already decided on an e89 (second shape zed)? 15k could get you a nice e85 M roady. :D
It's all down to what options YOU consider a must have, I like heated seats because I'm soft and like to have a warm bum in winter but some couldn't care less about having them.

///MR is not the cheapest Zed to run. Though if you take depreciation into account. It may be cheaper that many newer Zeds. It was my first open top car and is certainly not too fast, yet fast enough to have fun in. :driving: I think an E89 is probably a safer bet for the OP though.

Thanks for the fast responses.

So I can get a 20i , which is cheaper than the 28i and remap it? Or is it even better to get a 18i and remap it? What is the approximate cost ? How much of a pain is it insurance wise ?

In the other topic they seem to lean towards the 3l 3.5I and 3.5IS which might be a bit of an overkill for me.

I think I want heated seats and I'm not that worried about the sat nav I guess. Why is it a bit of a marmite? just not very good ?

Hi, from my understanding the 18i will remap for around £600. I have an 18i and I'm saving my pennies for this

Not a bad result for the money and much cheaper than buying a car with the same umph. Obviously I don't know the insurance implications of a remap but hayho :driving:

As far as Sat Nav goes it's either 'like them' or 'loath them'. I've got it and it's pretty good. I don't have heated seats and to be perfectly honest I don't much care for them, don't have them on the MG either

I hope you find what you need

X2 and My thoughts exactly..

I would if I were you and you could manage the running costs?

That said, smiles - per mile, are priceless in these little gems IMHO.. :driving:

Good luck in your quest and are you any further as yet?

Cheers..

Ive been studying the 89ers for last few months & this would be a decent place to start your search  http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=100327&p=1466948#p1466948
