Which Ones... There's 3 To Choose From

Hi, i am on my second Z4 now, i previously had a convertible and changed to a coupe (with a Golf r32  in between)... and this is the first time i have needed to buy tyres since i changed them on my Z4 roadster (4 years ago), so please bare with me...

I bought Falken 452's 4 years ago for my roadster as they seemed to be the favourite tyre among the forms... i've done some searching around on the forum this morning and it seems like 453's are out now but there is still a battle betweem 452's and Vreds :)

I presume either 453's or Vreds are ok to go with then? I see 3 different types:

[£97] Vredestein Tyres / Car / Vredestein Ultrac Vorti - 225/40 R18 92Y XL TL
(Fuel Eff.: E Wet Grip: B NoiseClass: 2 Noise: 70dB)

[£94] Vredestein Tyres / Car / Vredestein Ultrac Cento - 225/40 R18 92Y XL TL
(Fuel Eff.: E Wet Grip: C NoiseClass: 1 Noise: 67dB)

[£90] Vredestein Tyres / Car / Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta - 225/40 R18 92Y XL TL
(Fuel Eff.: F Wet Grip: C NoiseClass: 1 Noise: 67dB)
Sameday Dispatch (Mon-Fri) if ordered before 1:00pm

The Vorti are the best of those from the fuel efficiency & wet grip scores (and the replacement for the Sessanta). The Cento is a more touring-biased tyre.

Cool, thanks... this is all that seems to be available for the rear in terms of sticking with Vreds

[£122] Vredestein Tyres / Car / Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta - 255/35 R18 94Y XL TL
(Fuel Eff.: F Wet Grip: C NoiseClass: 1 Noise: 67dB)

Should i therefor get Sessanta's back and front?

Well, my preference is to keep the same on both axles, but unless they're completely different categories of performance between them I don't think it would matter.

i'd personally go for the sessanta's. they're tried and tested and i've been using them for 5 years now on multiple cars.

I have sessanta rears & cento fronts , no issues with dry/wet grip & noise/comfort is excellent :) would buy again for sure

I called the place where i was looking to buy the tyres from today (one of the most well known tyre suppliers in the UK) and they told me to go for 453's over Verds because the Verds don't adapt as good to the suspension settings on the Z4 due to the fact that the suspension is set up for runflats so i went with the 453's.

I would like to know if he was filling me with crap but then again why would he... the 453's worked out just slightly cheaper than the Vreds.

also worth considering are the Khumo ecsta le sport ku39. I would say very similar to the falken in performance etc. they came recommended to me from a bunch of places over the 453's and prices are similar.

after a lot of reading about and conversations it seems like those ratings for tyres are at best a guide and are subjective to brand etc. it is industry regulated and a bought into system so not as independent as you think. obviously I would say the main brands are probably not too far wrong.

ok cool, thanks i have now ordered the 453's... can anyone recommend a PSI for the fron and back, would i be right in saying 34psi rear and 32psi front?

Was the price considerably less than premium brands? Last summer I went to change tyres and the price of falkens fk453 were only slightly cheaper than the michelins primacy hp's , ps3's and continental contisport contact 3. Less than 100 euros for 4 tyres so I went for the michelin primacy because of the expected better life and comfort between the 3. Up to know I am very satisfied as after 6000 miles they look like new. Fk452 were out of stock, I think the production discontinued when 453 came out.

Ok cool, thanks... what is your reason for such high pressure, cheers

You won't get an answer yet, he's preparing his 10k post

The OEM runflat pressures are very high, something like 38 rear, 35/36 front. I use 36 rear, 33 front on my non-RTFs. In my experience the pressures on drive wheels are always higher, but you know that. I just took two PSI off - no science, but decided that I still needed quite high pressures. Maybe to deal with the changing angles of the wheels on cornering and the fact it is a sports car and needs a firmer ride ? No idea - sars will give a scientific answer if she sees this... personally I tried lower pressures, but the car just felt sluggish and lazy. Higher pressures tightened it right back up.

Ok cool, thanks for the input guys, i'll try 36 rear and 33 front to see how it goes... i ordered the tyres from the UK yesterday and just checked the tracking now and they have already arrived in Dublin so hopefully will have them fitted today, thanks again for the help...

The recommended pressures are actually a little higher - I've run recommended pressures and my own, and there's very little difference. If anything, the slight drop in pressure makes the car a little more forgiving in wet conditions (in my opinion)
