Afternoon Guys (and Girls!),

Serious question, which one of these would you go for and why?

(strangely on their website they have this up for £11995)

or

Having not driven either of these variants, performance wise would there be much in it? 3lt straight six twin turbo must be up there with the Z4M? I'm genuinely intrigued what people would go for.

Headline power figures may not show much difference, but the delivery of the power will be completely different.

Do you want a sports car that requires a bit of skill to extract the performance or a capable grand tourer?

I think the drivers car would be the Z4M, also the noise

I'm all over the shop at the moment, Coupe, 3lt Roadster, that Z4m or a the twin turbo E89.....or a Cayman

Just wondered what people thought about both of them.

If it was me I’d go for the Z4M, unlikely to depreciate like the 35i and will be a lot of fun. That said the running costs are going to be a chunk higher. Great choices to have though.

It depends what you want from your car. I have an E89 which I love. It drives well and quickly when required. The folding hardtop adds security and it is comfortable on any length of journey. But it does not have the rawness and excitement that the Z4 M will offer. However, the E89 would easily easily work as an everyday car. You need to drive both before making any decision. Good luck with your search..

Thank you, I’ve owned both E89’s (both 2.5 m sport) and E85 (again 2.5 m sports) would like to drive them both and the 3lt

I have a 3.5is in Melbourne Red. Having owned a lot of cars over the years, including an E85 and a Cayman. This E89 is my favourite. I have had it over 2 years now and it still gives me a thrill every time I drive it. When I park it I always look back as I walk away.98C5DA38-03C6-47DF-A58D-0410C575FD8C.jpeg

35i if you aren't worried about depreciation.

Genuine question, do you think there’ll be much depreciation in the 35i. They seem to holding their money pretty well.

OP, depending on whether you want to spend a bit of money on your new purchase or not. A map and change of shocks seemingly transform a 35i as per [ref]john-e89[/ref], one.

I have a 35iS rather than the 35i and it handles well enough for me and is more than quick enough too but as above John says the remap and shocks have taken his to another level

The ///MR has been for sale since June last year according to the AT advert so maybe a bit of leeway on price??

id go for the e89 for no reason other than i prefer the cabin and comfort of the e89, i dont really care for rawness or outright speed these days but then Ive always got a motorbike or 2 kicking around if i do fancy that

I think they'll come down a fair bit more when used G29s start to become a bit more common. I guess the 35i does still have the advantage of being available as a manual...

If you drove them both for a hour you wouldn't need this thread

 I’m keeping a keen eye on both of those markets, there’s very little difference in price between a late 35iS and an early M40i

Got sent links by someone for a low mileage 66 plate 35iS at £29K and a 19 plate fully loaded M40i that was advertised on here was up at a dealer for £33k

Both have sold

That 'M' is sitting on a heavy mileage and has been well used, possibly thrashed. Not sure I would buy any car that has sailed past the 100K mark but then it is a matter of opinion.

🤔......true, your money on the M?

It really depends how you would expect to use the car and what traits you like.

I've only had E86s but I've never liked convertibles of any description, and by all accounts the E89 is more GT than Sports Car so after two 3.0Sis I bought an MC just over a year ago.

Do you like low-down torque (35i) or an engine that really only comes properly alive once you get past 5K rpm on the way to an 8K red-line (MR)?

If you want a reasonably comfortable daily driver a 35i might be a better idea but as a weekend toy for a blast on quiet back roads an M may work better.

But an M is going to have significantly higher routine running costs with £580 a year Road Tax and Inspection Services every 4 years (or less if you do some miles) that involve valve clearance checks and adjustment with shims that will cost £600/700 at an Indy.

And at 100+K miles unless they have been replaced already I'd budget for new crank rod bearing shells that will be another £1K or so. I had mine done at 77K and the ones that got removed didn't look pretty.

If you like to modify the 35i can be mapped for way more power, whereas the M can't.

Your best bet would be to try a few of your options, but sadly just now that might be tricky. Although as we are supposed to stay at home you don't really need to rush.

Good luck finding the right car anyway.
