Which lowering springs and why?

Hi all

All being well, I should be picking up my first Z4 this weekend (2.5si) and I want to start looking into some of the mods I want to carry out. It's an SE spec that hasn't been messed with - so some new wheels and a slight drop are my first aims.

With regards to springs there are a few brands I can see at various price points. Can anyone tell me the benefit of one over another or is it just branding and I should just go with the cheapest?

FK - £70-90
Eibach - £100
H&R - £150

All drop by about 25-35mm.

I've done a search and can't see any comparisons made. Any recommendations?

I wouldn't fit FK springs been told that they are soft and not a good ride, I've got H&Rs in my 3.0si nice drop and a firm planted drive :thumbsup: didn't pay £150 for them think I paid around the £130 mark will look later
 
Eibachs here. Had them on 3 different cars now and can't fault them.

I had scraping issue's when I had fk's on.

JE - it's a 56 plate 2.5si se. I'm just trying to obtain the vin number so I can check what options were ticked.

So it sounds like I'd be pretty safe with eibach or H&R.

Coil overs - these are the shocks yes? Do I need to consider future combinations when selecting springs?

I think I want to aim at 18's for drive ability and tyre Costs. Though 19's are what my heart wants!
 
Can anyone recommend where to buy Eibach springs? Tried doing a search, but not coming up with too many answers.
I've got 108s on my zed which I'm going to be adding spacers to (15 & 20mm), with eibachs, will this give me any rubbing issues?
 
I had 20mm on the rear of mine (also with Eibachs and 108s) and although it was fine around town, I experienced rubbing when pressing on. Replaced them with 15mm which are perfect and don't look much different.

I tried the 15mm on the front at first and again there was rubbing, I'd be tempted to go for 10/12mm. :thumbsup:
 
Thanks for the recommendations on Eibachs (eBay.de).

Do they make the back end sag like H&Rs reportedly do? With those it looks like you need the thicker spring pad to look more level.

Also, do the wheels require spacers because they would then sit in a different part of the wheel arch once lowered?
 
Eibach's give a decent drop, but not too much, as you can see here.

Spacers are only needed if you want to bring your wheels out of the arch for aesthetic reasons.
 
As not familiar with the workings of the BMW warranty.
Would fitting lowered spring mess with the paper work?

That's convinced me - looks spot on where i want it. :thumbsup:
 
An additional question to the OP's original one, is it absolutely necessary to have a full wheel alignment carried out once you have had lowering springs fitted, or just a good idea to?
Hope this isn't counted as a thread hi jack, it's not meant to be. :thumbsup:

Found out I have a snapped rear spring soooo I just ordered some Eibachs from ebay.de! Converted to about £115 posted as the Pound is strong against the Euro atm. Should come by next week.

I think I'm going to fit the rears myself then get the fronts done at a garage with the wheel alignment. Excited! ☺
 
Another related question (sorry for the hijack OP): when fitting Eibach's do you have change the standard SE shocks or will they work okay? Or possibly shorten their life..?
