Which Inspection Service is Due?

Had my E85 2.5 Zed a couple of weeks now - the service countdown is telling me that an INSPECTION is due in about 1400 miles.

Is there a way of telling if this is an Inspection 1 or an Inspection 2? Unfortunately my Service History is a little patchy in recent years so its not easily clear which was done last.

Any suggestions?

If in doubt, do an Inspection 1/2.

At least that way, you'll have a good foundation on which to base future services.

So service book looks like this which kind of suggests someone did an I2 back in 2013 at 70k

It’s now at 90k so I think this would be the next “lights on” at around +20k after last (though obviously probably missing a few years annual oil service)

I did say it was patchy! Though when I got it two weeks ago, I did a full oil change, oil and air filter.

However get the plugs replaced as that service was 5 years ago.

It might be worth considering a gearbox oil change diff oil change, brake fluid change and a coolant flush also 8)

Ins1 is little more than a oil service with glance over the main parts so don't be fooled into thinking parts were changed there :wink: MOT will give you the same .
If you plan to keep a while do all the fluids ( coolant , brake , gbox , engine ) + filters & plugs then crack on & enjoy

I think our cars actually tell you when a brake fluid change is due. It's the small spanner icon that appears with the service indicator isn't it?

With that said, it's never a bad idea to get it swapped if in doubt. I just had some high temp DOT 4 put in mine.

Also, not to be a smartarse, but do you mean DOT5.1 not DOT5? DOT5 is a very different type of fluid, and won't be compatible with the DOT4 used as standard, so it's an important distinction.

I had mine done at BMS Surrey about 6 weeks ago.

I’m pretty sure they put DOT5 in there.

Not to my knowledge.

However the standard BMW servicing schedule is as follows:

Oil service
Inspection 1
Oil service
Inspection 2

(Repeat)

I like to change my oil every 6 to 8 thousand miles however some may feel this is overkill.

Having said that BMW recommends to change your oil every 12,000 miles or 2 years (which ever comes first).

Highly unlikely it's DOT5 as it's a completely different chemical base and incompatible with DOT4 fluids.

Also, while 5.1 does have higher minimum specs, the best fluids are generally only DOT4 accredited, such as ATE TYP200, Motul RBF600/660, Castrol React SRF etc. I expect they see no point in proving 5.1 minimum when anyone going out buying them knows well how good they are.

TYP200 is what I run and it's fantastic, along with EBC yellow pads. The car stops on a dime and I've never had the slightest whiff of fade (although I have had plenty of whiffs of very hot brakes with the roof down!)
