Which head gasket? 1.16 or 1.46mm

Just a simple question... I want to replace the valvetronic seal and the eccentric shaft sensor on my N52 23i, for this I have to take off the cylinder head. BMW recommends to replace the head gasket as well, but I checked in realoem and there are two types available 1.16mm and 1.46mm in thickness. Anyone know what's the difference, and which one I need? Does it actually need to be replaced?

ooops bmw had the newtis site shut down :o :|

anyhow, to replace the seal under the valvetronic motor no need to even remove the valve cover

I cannot check now the other one, but that sits on top of the valve cover as well

I suggest you research this a bit more, before buying a head gasket ...

the info on newtis and the official bmw site, which is listed there now, is available from inside ISTA-D

check my video on accessing technical data w/o the car being connected to diag:

checked this, only need to remove the engine cover

search for this in ISTA-D: "Removing and installing/replacing gasket for eccentric shaft sensor"

For the valvetronic seal yes, but for the eccentric shaft sensor (I want to replace the sensor, not just the seal) I have to remove the head....

Thye thicker gasket will most likely be needed if you need to have the head skimmed once removed. The head must be checked to ensure the mating surface is absolutely flat using a steel rule and feeler guages, or prefereably a vernier guage. If its at all warped it will need machining. Once the metal is removed you have essentially increased the compression ratio of the engine. A thicker head gasket would counteract that. You will also need a full new set of head bolts and all the tightening info - which order they are tightened and how much.

I think it may be terminology that is getting mixed up here. You definitely DO NOT need to remove the cylinder head to change any of the valvetronic parts or eccentric shaft sensor, but you do need to remove the valve cover or rocker cover if you like.

There is a huge difference in amount of work between rhe two!

I got back access to newTIS and checked this

the article 11 37 030 Removing and installing/replacing eccentric shaft sensor (N52) talks about Remove cylinder head cover first

if you follow the link, it leads to removing the valve/rocker cover, still the page is titled as cylinder head

I guess it may come from a bad german translation or such

Must be a translation confusion as you say. I'm glad you didn't order a head gasket and start removing the cylinder head! :o

Thanks, now I know the reason.

For the translation error, it's the cover, sorry guys, probably from realoem where I checked the parts
