Kit lenses are kit lenses they will offer the same focal lengths and similar apertures. Haven't looked at them but the canon ones do have IS as standard. Sure the Nikon ones will be similar. The IQ will be negligible. But remember once you start buying into one system it starts getting expensive if down the line you want to change it.

I forgot to say those old lenses can be picked up for almost nothing I've never paid more than £20 and that was a 300mm lens ...... Which does look bloody daft on such a tiny camera

I was worried about the canon, as they didnt have 'IS' in the title so I thought they didnt have any, however the Nikon are called 'VR'

I will have to make a choice soon, althoug I think Im heading towards the Nikon, as it just felt better in my hand

I had a 450D, now upgraded to a 50D. Still have no idea what I'm doing half the time
Get yourself a copy of Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson: inhale this book, it's full of good stuff that will make you look at the way you take photos and improve.

I started out with the kit lens which is perfectly decent, then got persuaded to buy my 'monster lens' 17-55mm f/2.8 plus a couple of others.
Pick up the 50mm lens - Nifty Fifty or Plastic Fantastic, great little lens for not a lot of money that's great in low light conditions.

I personally favour portrait shots because people are more interesting than landscapes (to me), here are some of my efforts.
With the 50mm and a 60mm macro (after the monster lens' AF motor failed)
With the big lens

Being a Nikon owner, I would say Nikon
No disrespect to Canon owners here, but for me Canon felt way too plasticky for my liking. I went with Nikon D7000 instead.
Personally I find 50mm on a cropy body to be too long for normal everyday photography. I think 30mm or 35mm is a better length for everyday use.
Not sure whether Canon has finally updated their sensor, but it was getting quite long in the tooth at the time.

I would suggest just starting off with the kit lens. You can still take amazing pictures with the kit lens. That way you can work out what lens is suitable for you rather than just going by what everyone else is recommending, which may not be your cup of tea. You don't want to invest in lenses you hardly use as they are not exactly cheap!

Remember that the photographer is a lot more important than the equipment. I've seen some great photographers taking great photos with average lens and I've seen some terrible photographers taking rubbish photos with very high end equipments.

Not sure if they have the same in Britain. In America. There are companies that will rent lenses. That would absolutely be the best way to gauge what lenses you want. I have a crop D5100 with the kit 18-55MM lens. It's a good all around cheap I don't have to worry about lens. I added a Tokina 11-16 F/2.8 superwide for landscapes and inside buildings. And a Sigma 50-150 F/2.8 OS for Medium telephoto. And I can use a Sigma Tele converter on the 50-150 for a 100-300 f/5.6 telephoto.

I'm thinking about getting this Sigma 18-250mm lens for use on holiday to reduce the amount of gear I need to take. I know it's not going to be as good as two lenses that cover the same range but hopefully a good compromise. It's only Florida so general photography.

Super zooms are always poor, slow, bad AF, very soft would give it a miss.

Have two good lenses like a standard zoom and a tele like a 24-105 and a 70-300mm combo much better quality. Or another compromise to have a smaller super zoom, the bigger the range the worse it will be.

Just because they are holiday snaps doesn't mean they have to be poor quality. If anything thats what a camera is for to record family

They do indeed! All the prices include the import they used to be cheaper but now they come through no problem.

Got my 5DMKIII for £2500 with the lens kit which is the same as the UK body only.

They are imports but... with those savings you cant argue comes with all eng instructions and cables etc You still get the year warranty. No brainer.

There are lots... depends what you want what do you shoot?

A total amateur - A friend used his SLR on a recent road trip which truly opened my eyes to photography, more so owning decent equipment

So could be a 4 week lover affair, or could be a real hobby in the making - Open to ideas on equipment - budget max of £600! - thanks

I already have the Canon 17-85 (cam with 40d) and 70-300 both IS lenses. Will take these then.

Or upgrade the 17-85 to a 15-85 much much better had the 17-85 and it broke pretty epically the 15-85 is much sharper and a bit wider :evil:

It's lasted me 4 years and for 2mm I doubt I would notice the difference the times I use it.
