Which dangling, disconnected hose is this?

 Mostly Holland. Sometimes UK.
So, after giving the engine bay a bit of a clean and a once-over I came accross a hose dangling free and easy in the breeze. Bit worrying. Connection point is out the back of the large dia hose coming from the airbox. Rubber extension had broken but managed to bodge it back in the large hose connection point and seal and secure with tie-wraps. Bit heath-robinson but more importantly it's back in and doing it's job, whatever that is.
Anyone shed any light on what it feeds? Still looking for a TIS to run. Bizarre that there's no Haynes or Bentley manuals available!

Ill have a look at mine tonight, but that connection is just next to the throttle-body. If the pipe source really is the air filter box, i really don't see the point in it as they are both connected by the wide intake pipe? The only thing i can suspect without looking is some kind of pressure equalizer.

Thx. I have a P3240 fault code pending ATM. (thermostat) U reckon it might be connected somehow?

No mate, totally unrelated. The thermostat is electronic in BMW's so that would indicate a failure there. Its a relatively simple fix albeit a little fiddly. You can get a new thermostat with housing for ~£25. It is a black plastic thing with 2 coolant hoses going into it, to the right of the VANOS.

If replacing your thermo housing, make sure you have some bolts spare - the heads sheared off 2 of mine as they had corroded into the block slightly.

Great tip Ed,, thx. Going to have a crack at it as soon as the stats ordered.
U manage to take a butchers at that hose? Any ideas?

It disappears under the top engine cover somewhere. I'll try and take a few more photos when i get a chance. But it's not fluids as it comes directly out of the big air pipe coming straight from the air intake box. Looks like some kind of sampling sensor small guage feed hose to me. Poss temp. Could be for MAF. Didnt seem to make a blind bit of difference after discovering it and reconnecting. I'd driven hundreds of miles since picking it up last week.

I had a quick look in mine but ideally needed a torch. What I could see is that it's connected to a vacuum line which supplies the brake booster servo, behind a one way valve.

I would say that it's designed to vent positive crank case pressure into the inlet.

To summarize, it could be stealing engine vacuum and affect your brakes, so make sure you fix it soon!

Hi, I thought the thermostat in the m54 engine was a mechanical one & it was the n52 engine which had the electronic version? :?

I think that hose is part of the vacuum system. I think this hose is connected to the suction jet pump and I think creates a small vacuum while the throttle body is opened (the suction jet pump).
You need to replace the large rubber elbow in which that 90deg. plastic thing goes into.
Those are sensitive to aging and can tear on different places (as you've seen) and if there's a leak it can cause engine lights (running lean codes).

You're absolutely SPOT ON with that assessment Guido! I'm getting P0174 and P0171 codes (running lean in both banks).
However, I re-inserted the hose back into what's left of the receptacle and anchored with some tiewraps.
It fits nice and snug and secure. I reset the codes but they've come back.
Will be replacing a few perishable parts, hoses etc. and checking the DISA and lower rubber boot under the DISA so I'll replace the big airbox elbow too.
Getting a P3240 (thermostat) code too - any ideas? I'm thinking about replacing the stat and water pump as a matter of caution.....

Hi,
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread :poke: but I have spotted this exact issue on my zed (e85 3.0) and am hoping some kind member may be able to help me identify what part I'm after to fix it? I have been googling for hours to no avail, I think I must be missing some info as I was hoping I'd be able to just replace the connection but everything I find comes as a complete vacuum hose kit, that's pretty pricey for what appears to be an issue on one small part of bigger system... :headbang:

Thanks all

I think its pipe number 3 you want.

Thanks, I've taken a look at the link. I'm thinking the pipe itself is fine but the connection into the air intake boot is broken? The link shows the connector as number 6 but is greyed out? Any idea as to whether it comes with pipe 3? I think I may still be a little confused as to how it actually attaches...

Yeh, I think it's the whole large elbow part you need - as per below. This is no bad thing as the smaller concentina hose commonly splits when the cars get to 15 years old or so....

Thanks, yes, I have that part ordered and waiting on delivery. For now it's a gorilla glue/tape bodge until it arrives :?
