which coolant to use

Just browsing the how to guides http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=10768, and it mentions using the bmw coolant.

Is this the correct coolant:

Thanks

Coolant is ethylene glycol and that is the base compound and will last forever. The additives are what make the difference. E85s do not need their coolant changed on a routine basis (3-4 years) but if work is done, the below list are 'approved' by BMW.

Approved anti-freezing and anti-corrosive agents:
With the protection of the environment in mind, BMW has been filling all of its vehicles with nitrite- and amino-free
anti-freezing and anti-corrosive agents since mid-1986 as standard practice. The use of anti-freezing and anti-corrosive agents that contain nitrites and amines is no longer permissible.

Bottom line, use what is in your radiator. If it is orange, red, green or yellow, use a similar colored coolant. The color typically denotes the additives.

If you have an N52 I'd use only what BMW supply - similar cost to that link at about £10 for 1.5l that dilutes to double the volume.

Thanks rjsimmons and Steve for the detail.

Can anyone link me to where I can get this? Can't seem to find any parts with the 81 22 9 407 code ref.

Thanks in advance

I've just bought 1.5lt from the dealer for a top up. Cost £11.08. Not too bad considering it's the stealers.

And you don't have to buy the overpriced "BMW coolant", there are plenty of good, aftermarket alternatives.

Coolant is the only thing I have ever bought at a dealer in 30 years buying car servicing gear.. its actually very reasonably priced and if i remember correctly quite a strong compound so you need to use less than other coolants on the market, for the sake of saving just a few pound or two over possibly getting a not quite right formula its probably the one thing that is worth buying direct from a dealer

I've been using Comma G48 Xstream in my Z4 for the last 6 years with no issues. BMW approved, I would highly recommend it  https://www.commaoil.com/passenger-vehicles/products/view/51920210216_115826.jpg
