Which compact laptop?

I'm off to the US in a couple of weeks with work and want to try and take advantage of the great exchange rate. Posted a while back on laptop options (non-Mac as I use one for work all day, every day!) - so I wonder if anybody here has looked recently and could advise. Spec required is as follows:

- Between $250-$500
- Intel processor
- Around at least 2GHz processor speed
- Minimum 250gb hard drive
- Optical drive preferred.
- No larger than 15" screen

I'll predominantly be running music production software on it; recording and sampling things etc.

Should be able to get to a Target or Best Buy while away so interested to hear what my PC cousins would go for.

This looks pretty good but lacks optical drive, although I guess I could add separately.

The Lenovo Yogas are very nice devices - unless you're going to be using it constantly I wouldn't get hung up about the lack of an optical drive, built-in ones make the laptop thicker and heavier and the USB optical drives are cheap add-ons.

Whatever laptop you buy, one thing that will be worth considering is replacing the HD with an SSD - you can get a decent SSD in the 240-256GB bracket for well under £90 and they make everything faster and smoother as well as extending the battery life.

Good shout!

Hows the battery life for normal usage?

EDIT: Inkey if you find anything else worth buying, let me know - i'm there for ~3 weeks in Aug too :P

I would say a lenovo yoga too... I love my yoga 2 pro... Which replaced my mb pro.

slightly out of your price range but definitely worth it... surface pro 3 ... starts at $800 (about £470)

also resale value will be strong when you want to sell it...you could even buy it just to sell when you come home
Premium 12" device with a 1440p touch screen display, great speakers...exactly the same size as an A4 writing pad
usb 3, latest i3 and 64gb ssd on the base model with great battery life
$1000 you get a i5 and 128gb

I appreciate you need a large storage so you expand the storage up to 128gb with a sd card
I had the surface pro 2 and the magnesium casing feels very nice and solid

P.S you can either use a bluetooth keyboard which can be bought for like £10 or purchase the magnetic clip on keyboards which act like a cover also to protect the screen... $99 for one i think.
