Which brakes?

I had a search on here, but I cannot find the answers to some questions. Maybe someone can help.

I need to replace the rear discs and pads on my Z4C 3.0Si. I would like to fit OE (or at least a reputable brand that looks OE). I've been quoted £101 for the discs and £49 for the pads (plus the dreaded VAT) from my local BMW dealership.

Does anyone know what the OE brand for the discs and pads is, and where I can get them at a more reasonable price? Is it advisable change the temp sensor at the same time?

Where are you based? I have a set of new, never used MTEC Dimpled and Grooved Rear Brake discs and Mintex Redbox Pads for the 2.5si, 3.0, and 3.0si. I bought them from a forum member some months ago but have never used them. They are yours for £65 if you can collect.

Thanks for the offer BeeEmm, but I really do want to put OE looking discs on (ie - no grooves etc). That way they'll match the front.

Thanks. Pagid ones look OK, and a good price too. Did they come with the silver coating over the unswept part of the disc (the hub bit that normally goes rusty!)?

My pagid front discs have been on for about 7 years and the unswept areas aren't rusty at all. My car is not garaged and is used throughout the year. Rear discs still look fine and have been on for about 4 years.

Pagid performance is good too.

I've used pagid on my Ford and have been pleased with their performance. I wouldn't recommend the EBC oem pads as they face like he'll :fuelfire:

I changed my rear pads to Ferodo ones 2 weeks ago and seem ok.
Haven't driven "The Beast" properly, though. :D :D

I should have said my pads are pagid too.

ive always used carparts4less, and got brembo discs, my pad choice isnt for everyone ferodo ds2500.

I’ve just got textar e-pads and Brembo xtra discs for the front.
I got the pads from EuroCarParts with the normal 50% discount offer.
I actually got the discs cheaper through amazon than was available from EuroCarParts!

I believe ATE are the OEM provider to BMW. So if you want or. Then go for them. I have brembo xtra discs and ate pads on mine

Just swapped mine to MTEC discs, Brembo pads, Biggred caliper rebuild and Goodridge braided hoses - all non-OE - so I'm afraid I can't help you out...

EuroCarParts are always having some sort of sale, the code is normally on their website.
Their sister website carparts4less is always a good comparison.

I use to use EBC Blue Stuff pads in my Impreza, would these also be a good option with my E85 M? I'm not really liking the brake feel with my M and even my old man has grumbled how he doesn't like the feel of the brakes either.

I found with the blue stuff pads, once you got heat into them, they were a very progressive pad but would bite if needed. I know they are not normally meant for road use, but I'd rather have pads that will not fade on me no matter how much heavy breaking I do on the roads. I did have really beefy front brakes, with a 4 piston Alcon caliper and 330mm drilled disc. Weight wise, I think the Impreza was maybe 100kg's lighter than my E85 M.

In the E46 M3 Cab, my old man used red stuff pads and he actually swapped them out with the "normal" pads as he said he ruined the feel of the brakes. He does like really grabby brakes. I would like the brakes to feel like they come on quicker but let me have to travel in the pedal. I don't know how to put things into words right, but it feels like I have to put more distance on the pedal and they don't start to bite until I really apply more force. The car has a fresh MOT on it, so I know the brakes are "safe" , but they don't inspire total confidence. It's the only negative I have with the car (bar it being a pig to go from 1st to 2nd gear when cold)

I have EBC Yellows on at the minute. I was looking at them or the Ferodo 2500, ended up with the EBC as I got them for a frankly rediculous price from ECP with one of their rare codes that worked on performance parts.

I'm perfectly happy with them and would likely stick with the same when replacing. They bite well from cold and work better hot. I've noticed they are a bit squealy when cooling down but that's nothing to worry about. Given the car plenty of blasts and they never failed to inspire a bit of confidence when combined with ATE TYP200 fluid.

I will give them a try. The fluid has a higher boiling point, so it keeps it's thickness better at hotter temps?

I'm not hugely clued up on the benefits of better brake fluids, my understanding is the higher boiling point means it's much less likely to boil up and lose the pedal, yeah. For the price of brake fluid it's not a big cost every 2 years to use a £14 fluid instead of a £4 one.
