Which 3.0 to avoid HVA and roof issues?

Very few cars have had the head changed, mine is only one of two or three I know of one here. What I can see is if the head has been changed for the new one which incorporates a non return valve then the problem will not return.

I would not let this problem worry me to much if looking at one of these, just be aware and do as much as you can to establish if it has had any work done in this area. If it's under warranty even less of an issue.
 
Mines been trouble free, owned it for 4 years and has never ticked once. Its a late 2007 model, used as my daily driver doing 15-20K a year, now only use it once or twice a week so it sits in the garage for 4-5 days unused. Luckily nothings local to me so when I used it it gets up to temp.

I would not let this HVA issue put me off buying one nor will I let it worry me about mine. Mines out of warranty and i've not extended.
 
I suspect there are a few cases where the valve clatter is really loud, which may lead to bent valve stems. In most cases, it's no worse than solid lifters out of adjustment. It is really annoying, could affect performance, but does not cause any real damage. I just resolve to always take the scenic route, it's no chore, I love driving this car! :driving:

The issue has been blown out of proportion on forums like this because most of us are OCD to some extent, including me. The average 3er/5er N52 owner never notices there's a 'problem.'

Well said and i agree..we are mostly ocd and most others wouldn't notice more than likely!
 
Thanks so much for all the useful advice and reasurances certailnly make me feel more at ease. When I buy I will be purchasing from a BMW dealer so will have at least the peace of mind of a years warranty. Really love the Zeds, but was beginning to have serious cold feet. But as you all say it is only a very small percentage that have had the HVA issue, and quite rightly we have heard a lot regarding this issue, however we tend to forget just how many Zeds have been sold and run free of the HVA troubles. I will just have to force myself when I finally get my Zed to take the long scenic :driving: home. :D
 
Mine does it, I have honestly given up caring. Have also noticed loads of cars doing it since mine started, all makes of cars too.

A friend has a 500bhp ish Lancer, you should here that when its cold, it literally sounds like a bag of nails in the engine.

The thing that is making me not worry so much about the tapping issue is the fact mine doesnt seem to change with the engine speed so I would suggest its not hitting everytime and sticks occassionally.

I was pissed off when it started doing it, BMW changed the HVAs, it did it again 2 days later.

To be perfectly honest Im more bothered that I didnt hold out for the blue car I wanted!

Does a long drive get rid of it? Or the 'reset' that BMW suggest? Or do you get it all the time without fail?
 
Goes after 4 or 5 miles. However the length of time till it comes back seems to depend on the length of time till it comes back. Drove to Brum and back in a day, 400 or so miles, was fine for 2 weeks after that

Honestly wouldn't let it bother you if you like the cars anyway get one. I am not like some on here who seem to think they are amazing, they are nice cars but they do have plenty of faults. All cars do though, if you are looking for a perfect car you are going to be looking at a much higher cost factor and even then its not guaranteed to be without problems.

It did worry me at first but now its more of an annoyance
 
All I was worried about was the fact it will go away. I have a 20 mile commute but car may stand for 3-5 days sometimes. But it clears itself then it's okay
 
Get an Alpina, I just sold mine for a 9k trade in to a dealer.
I had to get rid of her because of babyseat issues :(
The car was a dream I did a 60miles a day roundtrip commute and would normall get 28mpg heavy on the accelerator, 34mpg when driving smooth and careful.
No rattles or squeaks, problems I encountered, satnav losing satellites, the aircon needing attention and a cracked alloy, those 19" are exepensive new, but I managed to get a secondhand at 1/3 of the new price.
I miss the car a lot, get one you will love it.

Prob's because it is a supercharged washing machine. Did left some keys in his overall pockets ;)! :rofl:

Those engines need constant attention they are so ridiculously tuned.
 
I have little faith in any Japanese turbo car.

Mates Impreza head gasket went at 60k miles. Radiator then went. Constant source of issues

I think discounting a whole countries cars let alone a whole manufacturers cars because of 1 problem car is a bit of an over reaction.

I am sure with any manufacturer there are good and bad cars.

Not MG though, they are all bad!
 
My car is a 2009 Coupe, not sure when it was manufactured. i only use mine once a week maximum at the moment in the bad weather and do about 36 miles (2 x 18 miles) trips with the occasional long run and a few road trips thrown in. So far I haven't noticed any obvious ticking noise just the sound of a cold engine nothing loud. Having said this this potential problem did persuade me to extend the warranty just in case i ever do notice any tapping noises.
