Where would you/did you go from an M?

I drove a 4.7 Vantage and was not exactly blown away by the performance - the thing is they weigh a shedload more than the BMW does.

The 4.3 vantage probably has a lower BHP/tonne.

Angelus, how is the TTRS for turbo lag? Assuming it is a turbo'd one. My mum has a Mk1 225 and it is nippy, but the turbo takes a while to spool up and does spoil enjoyment on country roads - by the time you've waited for the power to come on, you've gotta back off for the next corner. The Zed is so sharp on the response.

My dad has a 355 and we are fairly convinced that the Z4 is just as fast. The Ferrari is not a quick car. Some for the 360, they are very torque-lite at low revs, even by ///M standards. Peak torque on a 355 comes in at 6000rpm!

I'd fancy a Boxster Spyder at some point. Admittedly I've never driven one, but from what I've read and seen, it looks a special car.

My biggest concern is whether I'd want more power. I enjoy pressing the loud pedal, but even in a Z4M more than a few seconds of this and you can be in license losing territory. I would also want driver involvement so things such as a GTR would be out.

I'd seriously consider an E30 M3. Power wise it's nowhere compared to modern standards, but what a great drive.

All depends what you want from a car.

The prices of the V8V have crept up over the last year...mine was £28k with 35k miles on it back in 2012...I think it may have increased slightly in price if I sold it now! In my mind I think a manual DBS is a cracking buy at £70k...had one for a few weeks, overall the best car experience I have had. Non-car people love that car....and the first car I have driven that actually resulted in a hot girl (well, 7/10 level) directly hitting on me.

Actually, lack of depreciation it's a big part of the reason I bought a Z4MC...can only see this little one holding it's value over the next 3 years. I've done my bo**ocks on depreciation in my time, lesson well and truly learnt!

With you on the Boxster Spyder steve - beautiful looking car.

When I had my 996, I took it in for a service and they gave me a black new shape (981) Boxster. Standard card, not the S, but it had PDK and the sports exhaust. Not a quick car at all, but sounded awesome and handled absolutely brilliantly.

If I had the money and inclination for a new Porsche, I really don't think a 911 would get much consideration.

JayEmm - the turbo is a factor in the TT...you have to drive it differently, so at standstill, you simply can't apply a small amount of throttle, there is very little there below 2500rpm....then when you hit that, bang, you're moving. It's quicker on the road than pretty much anything, and has fantastic grip at this time of year. I much prefer a NA car to any turbo car I've driven. The R35 GTR is probably the best turbo engine I've experienced, but then again, it's probably the best car I've ever driven.

Again had a 355 GTS for a week last summer, lovely car, properly fizzy V8 engine....terrible interior build quality, had to make excuses for it to passengers. Straight line the Z is probably quicker, but I felt the fezza had a better balance and it's manual click clack gearbox was beautiful to use.

E30 is a great call. I'd also love a wide body 993....never driven one, so desperate to get into one soon. Both solid investments too.

Ferraris of that era don't seem to wear very well. My dad's is in very good condition but he's had it for 18 years so you'd expect it. As an event it leaves the M in the dust, but I think it shows the strengths of the Z4 (and the pace of progress) that is is something worth comparing to.

The one area the 355 beats the Z4 for me is that it is available as a targa. I love the look of coupes but I like the wind in my hair, one of my main motivations for looking at TVRs originally (the Tuscan does the same thing). A Corvette does too but just not sure I could live with LHD, although the new C7 is stunning and the old Z06 is a missile.

I guess the question is whether it is a daily runner or a weekend summer toy . For raw speed and handling you can't top a Caterham IMHO ,although they can be rather tiring after after a short while ,but great fun for a short blat . Also you won't lose much cash reselling a Caterham ,at least not with an older one .I really liked my XKr in terms raw power and torque but the handling was a bit barge esque . Then there is the issue as to where you can use all that power in a sensible fashion on a public road without killing your self or losing your licence . I mean it is nice to have the power and torque for safe overtaking ,but otherwise one can argue than anything more an Mx5 is to be honest is a bit daft . In terms of bang for buck you can't top a mk1 Eunos with all the trick bits for circa 2 k and it won't Depreicate either . TVRs are nice in theory until you actually own one and they are built to a shoddy standard .

Love this thread...

And in no particular order contenders for replacing a Z4M are:

AMV8 Vantage
911 GT3
911s...
Boxster
Ferrari
MX5 Eunos
Corvettes!

absolutely kick myself every day for not buying one, i test drove they rolled out the red carpet and i flopped at the last moment, i got to spend lots of time on track with one and it was EPIC!! dynamically it shat all over the z4m, coupe or roadster, so much me and now look, pretty much the same price as they were new, numerous reports called it a roofless GT3. Such an awesome car, i SHOULD have traded my z4m at the time and got it. I will never forgive myself for such stupidness.

I went into a V8 M3 after my Z4M because in my head I was still missing a V8 from my TVR and I hoped the V8 M3 would tick the box for me but it didn't and with hindsight I really should have stuck with the Z4M for sure...I still lust after a Z4M Coupe very much too. :driving:

The next 'affordable' car for me would have to be a 911 (997) . Would love the turbo but can't see me being able to afford one anytime soon, plus a house upgrade would have to come first.

I would love to have a 997 GT3 one day as I think they are lovely cars...whether it actually ever happens is another thing though!

I agree it is but for some reason I prefer it to the Turbo, if I did ever get a GT3 I wouldn't use it as a daily and the Turbo is far more suited as a daily driver.

I love the GT3 too
Neither would be a daily driver though, I'm not even using the MC as a daily.
