Where would you/did you go from an M?

So, bit of a random post - but surely very relevant to all those here.

A bit about where I came from with regards to my Z4 purchase.

The particular car I bought was owned by my step-mother. I picked the car out when they were looking for a new car and it ticked all the boxes they needed. I bought the car having never having driven one but having had a couple of BMWs previously I know the handling was gonna be fine, the performance was gonna be fine and as I knew the particular example I had no worries about the history etc etc.... I had originally been saving towards buying something else (most likely a TVR Tuscan) but this came up, ticked a lot of boxes so I snapped it up.

My original plan was buy the car, have it for a few months, enjoy it while I kept saving and then move onto something a bit bigger/better.

Having spent a couple of weeks with the car now it seems to have buggered all my plans! I certainly can't think of anything that could replace it for the money and I can't help but wonder if any of the more expensive alternatives are actually any better?

I was planning to move to an Aston V8, but that's not even close to the Z4MC in my opinion. An Audi R8 is also probably no faster and I'm not sure if it is any better looking.

So my question to you guys I guess, in a roundabout way, is those who had or have Ms - how did you replace them? Did you replace them? Do you want to/what with? I get the nagging feeling that if I did sell the Z4MC, even for something seemingly more "special", I might feel like a right spanner.

I went to a 911, but had to add £90k to the value of my M to get it. Once in a life time event though.

See I've done the 911 bit and I had a BMW 645, both great cars although the 6 series and the XK are much more GT where the z4 still feels like a raw sports car with some usable space.

The new 911 targa is tempting, but silly money

This was being discussed recently in the GT86 thread, real raw power sports coupe's seem to be a bit thin on the ground right now. I'd probably go retro like the Esprit James May had on TG ..

In your dreams

That esprit was tidy, I would have a Giugiaro Turbo though... In Grand Prix white!

Went from Z4MC to 335i to Z4MR to Z3MC - all within 12 months.

Thats how much an M engine gets to you.

Just to point out, the R8 is significantly quicker and better handling than my MR. I drive dad's V8 regularly and it's on a different level. The V10 plus is one step further!

Such an ///M \\\Whore - love it

Discussed a fair bit on here JayEmm. Think you have to spend twice as much to get anywhere near a special feel. My next car maybe a GTR but cant get over the interior and badge..

As already mentioned the engine is a gem - albeit noisy in the wrong way sometimes!

I went from a ZRMC to a BMW X1 2.0d

A few reasons:
Not possible to buy something massively faster without spending a lot.So after years of driving faster cars just wanted something normal, with winter abilities, and able to ride over the potholes better :)
More importantly I was expecting to have to return to doing big miles again (I had already taken the car from 6000 miles to over 70k something in a little over 3 years). THis never worked out and now since buying the X1 not far off of 2.5 years ago now I have only covered 13k miles so the M would have been perfect although the X1 has been fantastic(moved home twice so the space has been great, helped out with sick family member and their hospital visits).

Still really like the X1 to be honest and would likely only have something sporty now as a second car. Having said that i did find myself pricing up a Cayman GTS recently with the idea of running it as a single car but would miss the practicality of having the X1 now. A cayman is probably natural progression from a Z4 but of course no faster.

I usually change my cars every 6 months and I'd all but bought an AMV8 with plans to have it brought home and sell the Z. The sat nav SUCKS in the aston, the key was the same as a mondeo key, few engine error notices, annoying suspension noises developed. It looked pretty but performance was no better than the Z for a good deal more money. Minor things but there are a many few things that just turn me off the thing as a package. Unless I went for a newer model with a huge price increase, I'd be left with a similar level of equipment to the Z.

Then I toyed with an M6. Brutal, brutal power, a bit too boaty and not sure I could live with SMG.

Then I eyed with a lotus elise and although I loved the test drive, the lower power / total no comprimise means that if I went this route I'd get a vxr8 or some shade of c class for a dd.

I'm building a 700bhp supra at the moment so it's not a simple case of wanting more performance, but after the Z there simple isn't anything this side of a gallardo, GT3 or 360 that interests me.. which all command anywhere from 30 to 70k over and above the M's value. So realistically it's going to be a 5 series alongside my supra - until I can get the gallardo of my dreams.

The Zs a cracking little car, quite a bit of character for something German and modern. I've got a V8V and a TTrs in the fleet right now, so can offer up opinion on these two. The Audi is pretty much quicker than the Z in every way, but it's competency at anything under silly speeds is what makes it slightly dull in comparison. The Aston is a peach, beautiful to look at, sound of the gods (fuse 22 removed) and handles fantastically..... it's pricey to run though if you use it as a daily.

Next move logically must be to the 981 boxster or Cayman....lovely cars.

funny thing is, in a competitive environment their is a TTrs in my class, the driver very very good, i was utterly shocked to see how poorly it performed on the circuit, the TTrs may have alot more outright grip than the z4m and more pace in a straight line, but let me tell you the chassis is no where near its equal, its a blunt instrument, a huge disappointment imo as it had all the makings to be totally epic.

After reading all this I had a look at the prices of a AV8. I was gob smacked. Expecting to see a dated car with a big price tag.

Starting at 30k for a stunning car. Buy one....

Like everyone is saying, it's either a big jump up in money, or a compromise on speed/handling focus against day-to-day practicality/quality for where to go next.
But the big jump up in money would buy you two vehicles which excel in one of each of the areas.
If you compare 35k for a decent AMV8
15k gets you a caterham for the zippy cornery stuff
20k gets you in a nice 3 litre diesel 7 series for the mile munching/day to day stuff.
Either will be better than the Aston at that bit of what you want from the Aston.
(ok, I know, I didn't mention the noise or "Making you feel like James Bond")
