Where to put "stuff"

Noob question time!

So, I did a search on "storage" and could find anything that would answer my questions... apologies if it exists...

Anyhoo, have just picked up my new Z4M (well, new to me) and whilst it's not a huge consideration, anyone got any cunning tips on how to make best use of, or "enhance" the storage in the cabin? I'm off to Le Mans 24 :driving: in just over a week and "Les Flics" need to see just about every piece of documentation which will more than fill what I have...

Many thanks in advance!

Is it a coupe or roadster?

There's the first aid box option as already pointed out, there are also 2 elasticated pockets on the back of the seats, then you can always get the passenger foot-well storage net (which holds not a lot), then there's always (for the roadster) the luggage rack.

LE-MANS                Not going this year first time in 10 years

Managed to fit everything your friendly Gendarme would wish to see in the Glove box (tea tray )

Where are you staying when you get there camp site or hotel ? we managed to get into the hotel b+b last year around 10 mins walk from Arnage before that we used to camp at Bleu Nord

Watch out for tripods on the way down and if you are travelling down Friday stop at Gace for lunch Superb

Have a look at this thread http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8603

Installing a 1st Aid Box under the drivers seat would be a good place to keep docco. :)

Bugger! I did look honest many thanks for the link and the tip!

Roadster - the luggage rack is an option I could not bring myself to do, but will investigate the storage net (I had this on my Z3 back in the day). The first aid box idea is a cracker - good to see it seconded.

How come no Le Mans for you this year?

I'll be camping as usual. Was in beausejour last few years which was a bit of a trek to the track, but great for guerilla viewing. This year we're using the grounds of a house here: http://hutch.whiterabbitracing.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=741&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

Very aware of the tripods. Much amusement last year when one of our crew driving a really noisy "Fiat" 360 CS got pulled and didn't have the 95 Euro fine to hand - much merriment that the guy in the 100K plus car didn't have any cash to hand  ... he got loads of sympathy and support over the radios!

Travelling on the Thursday on the O'crack sparrow fart ferry from Dover to Dunkerque (£38 - bargain), but N138 all the way down!

back on topic... try and utilize the space behind the roll bars, bit hard to put the hood down if you do that though but hey ho :D

Will try that, thanks. Dry run in packing this weekend, before stickering up next weekend. Methinks I will be travelling lighter this year...

Here's my take on the storage net fitting. I put one either side of the tunnel.

Also, instead of putting them so far forward that it's a physical impossibility to reach them when on the move, I mounted them much further back on the tunnel just to the front of the seats. It was a bit of an issue putting one of the securing clips into the carpet each side as it was flush against the tunnel, but once it was in, it lifted the carpet away ever so slightly for clearance.

Here are some pics:

Can you physically get anything in them in that position without fouling the seat movement?

If so, I might fit a couple more

Seat movement..?? I don't move my seat when I'm driving and if I did when stopped it would be backwards, not forwards.

If the missus moves her seat I just tell her to stop fiddling with the buttons as she'll wear the motors out and make me use more petrol....

What sort of stuff do you want to put in them and how far forward do you have your seat..? I'll do some tests for you.

I keep my wallet and phone in mine at the mo. I suppose thin stuff like that, or an ipod/mp3, a digi camera. Only fitted the passenger one today before I go on hol.

My seat is about 2" forward of the rear-most position - and only gets moved when it's at BMW or the detailer.

Don't know what I'll put in them, but it'll probably be things like ferry tickets, passport, etc. for when I'm on a 'Ring trip, or other bits & bobs (big enough not to fall through the netting, but small enough not to bulge and hit the seat - something like a 9mm and a couple of clips).

Ok, tricky to gauge your seat position due to where your backrest might be.

Here's my example, I've only got an inside leg of 30" and when my seat is in position, I can easily store my wallet and phone in the net.
I just put my ipod touch in there as well with no issues. You do have to twist your wrist a bit to get stuff in and out, but I don't find it too tricky. It doesn't get in the way of my leg either.

I've taken a few pics for you showing the stuff in there and roughly where my seat is poitioned. If you have one on the pax side, you could unclip it and try it in position too..?

The seat remained in the same position throughout the pics.

Hope this helps a bit..?

Crivens - this has moved on a bit.

Great phots Voodoo - really useful to see how you've done it.

Dry run packing was a success - not least because I got a mate to agree to take a load of stuff for me (well, the tent and sleeping bags) in his much roomier Skoda VR jobby. Realise now that I should have taken some phots to show how much stuff I managed to cram in  - but I'll do that when I unpack at Le Mans. This time next week I'll be on my way - having ironically come back from France the day before with work

I'll wait to see the weather forecast the day before I go before I decide to stuff bits in the gap where the roof goes - I'd hate to have to drive down with the roof up if it's blinding weather!

Thanks all for the tips and advice - muchly appreciated!
