Ruby, get one made. Seriously, there's a place on Wandsworth Bridge Road called Woodstock. They do reclaimed wood and new build tables, chairs, drawers, etc. Cheaper than standard places, made to your spec and will last for years. We have our dining table (with bench style seat) and a set of drawers from them.

Sounds interesting...will look into it

Along that theme, take the pic of the table you like and get it made at a local custom place...

Some great suggestions coming through, thanks guys  I've already short listed a few. Problem is because I have one main room that is going to be the living/dining room the wood theme has got to match throughout which makes it all the more complicated. Procrastination at its best when my only aim for this weekend was revision

If you have or know of someone with a van. Drive it over the next time you visit Germany. Have your S.O. look for a few antique shops. The Germans and French hate the old antique furniture. My German friends across the street cut up a huge oak shrank/bar to use as fire wood (no one would buy it at $200 USD) they wanted to buy the cool stuff at Ikea and get rid of that crappy solid oak garbage. :scratchhead:

Here's where we have bought a few things. http://www.freddyantiques.de/ Here is another shop just down the road. http://www.lucsantiques.com/index.php?cPath=22_40_52_57&osCsid=4f4554aa6bde705c59ef80dadbc223a8 If you want to find the nice antique shops. Just look for an American base. Bet there are a few near Lakenheath, Mildenhall. The Americans like the old antique furniture. I think you will find antiques much cheaper here in Germany though.

The Old Cinema Club in Chiswick is worth a visit: http://www.theoldcinema.co.uk

Etsy, of course! http://www.etsy.com/uk/browse/home-garden/furniture/tables/?ship_to=GB

My daughter has some decent stuff in her new house - www.oakfurnitureland.whatever

It looks like good quality to me - It all comes down to personal choice tho!

Get yourself down to your local antiques fair I wouldn't bother with modern furniture as its poorly made. All our wardrobes are Edwardian and chests of drawers Georgian for the bedrooms. Just takes a little time to find matching woods etc. Antique furniture doesn't have to be costly, is better made and won't lose value plus alot of late Georgian furniture is lovely to look at.

I agree that having a look at auction houses is a good way to go - I've just sent a pile of gorgeous bedroom furniture to auction from my late father's house - but I know I'll get buttons for it. It is a bit mad that good quality proper wood is getting dumped for eg Ikea stuff ( though confess to having some myself).

We bought an expanding glass table from Dwell cos it was kinda invisible if that makes sense ? Sadly Dwell closed down but their stuff is being sold from some actions.

Some designer stuff we loved was Tom Schneider - see link to a Glasgow store though sure others stock it too - yeah kinda expensive and the one we wanted was just too large for the space we had:

Good luck ! now back to cars'n stuff !

The interweb....seriously.

I moved into a new house last December and sold most of my old furniture with the old house and bought almost everything via the internet without seeing any of it......much better selection and got what I wanted rather than what I could go and see locally.....

made.com do some really nice stuff. not too bad on price too.

they have a showroom in london somewhere but have an excellent return policy anyway.

Hi Ruby,

As you're looking for suggestions may i offer:

www.antiquepineimports.co.uk Old tables and made to measure using old tops

or

www.uniqueteak.co.uk tables made using reclaimed teak in lots of popular sizes.

I work at both companies and i'm sure we can sort a z4 forum price for you!

Let me know if we can help,

Regards,

Glenn

Whatever you do take the time to choose something that you really like - You will have it for many years to come. Almost like planning an heirloom!

In years to come each mark, stain , chip etc on a family table will have its own tale to tell - "that's where grandpa dropped his tea cup " stories :D

After all that I finally found one on the Internet, arrived today and dad has put together just now..I'm really rather pleased. It's a bit plain but works I think.
