Where to buy exhaust?

I'm looking to make up an exhaust system, was looking to buy a spare to use as a template /Base to work from. Does anyone know where to buy standard exhaust from? Apart from bmw obviously cos I haven't got 8 grand for a spare exhaust! Going to R&D it so it sounds nice but without boy racer boom while at motorway speeds.
