He posted on this page, the 12th post: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

But none of the pictures show:

First make sure the top latches in the stowed position. If you can lift it, it is not locked.

On the above pic, you also see the hooks. Make sure to grease these with some teflon spray.

If you top folds down this way, that might be the reason why it doesn't latch:

must be something like this, just push the fold:

Official service bulletin: http://www.bmwtis.net/tsb/bulletins/bul ... 40302g.htm

IF the top latches OK, then put some felt on the lock mechanism. You can see it clearly if you look through the rear window. ONLY ON PRE-FACELIFT models!!

THEN, remove the plastic cover for the manual top release (just above the center console) and put some felt in there or use some teflon spray.

PS: on the facelifted models, the lock is gone:

Does anyone have it saved?

I have the same EXACT problem.....it drives me mad.

Any possible fix to this is great!

Cant see a link to any of his pics either.

Does anyone know how difficult it is to remove the panel from the central roof latch?

between bimmerforums.com, zpost.com, and this website, a lot of people have issues with squeaky tops. i've never come across an up-do-date DIY, and would like to have a shot at creating one. if there is old information that can be useful, even better. if you're in contact with GVfB, please ask him if he still has those pictures.

as of right now, i have no idea how to remove the area above the center storage console. i'm going to look into it this weekend, but felt tape is on my to-buy list. cheers :D

Just done a 600m round trip in mine and it's squeaking in a similar place, driving me absolutely insane.

I think mine is more the latch for the roof tho - doesn't do it roof up and if you try and push the stowed roof from side to side at a standstill it's a similar noise.

Don't think mines that panel - am I alone?

Hi i need to buy the cover shown in the pictures above because when taking mine off the parts were brocken. i looked on reoloem and found the part. Bit of a stupid question but i dont know if i should order the GRAU or the SCHWARZ one? Im sure the colour is the same as in the photos above. so would that be the SCHWARZ? cheers

i think only pre-facelift cars with red leather interior have gray panels. and all other models have black i believe
