Bit of a random one....but I've got some holiday time and some savings(that I haven't yet spent on my Z) and I'm really thinking of going somewhere in september on my own for a week. Atm I'm considering Tokyo, Hong Kong, NYC and Singapore....but any ideas, suggestions or past experiences would be helpful. Think of it as a mini backpacking excursion if you will

If your thinking long-haul have you considered Beijing? Went there a few years ago... loads to see - Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Great Wall at Badaling (short excursion).

what about Hong Kong supposed to be nice plenty of shopping etc can day trip to Beijing or Macau etc

Yeah. Did Hong Kong / Macau a few years back too... loved Hong Kong and Macau was interesting too - especially looking at the street circuit...

china to be fair does look like an amazing country...especially Beijing and Shanghai. The only concern is Visa requirements, just for a quiet life dont know if I can be too bothered to go into that malarkey. Visited St.Petersburg a few years back and that little stamp in my passport has caused a lot of hassle when entering other countries. might go read a lonely planet guide to Beijing does look fascinating.

Ido t think you need visa for Hong Kong as its a special administrative region ...ie still has own laws compared to the main land so does Macau afaik

one of the main reasons I'm draw to it. Flights to japan seem dead cheap atm....fukushimas influence maybe? both about 800-1000 quid for a weeks stay in a decent hotel with flights included. might explore this macau day trip seems like a winner

I would like to visit Tokyo Macau and Hong Kong shame the Mrs only wants beach holidays

Is a week going to be enough for a far east trip? 24hrs plus to get there plus recovery time. I'm in a similar position, I have a week in August. After my last attempt (rained off) I'm tempted to just sling the camera in the car, take the chunnel and go exploring. Maybe a run to the south of france... :driving:

Macau is about 90 mins from HK on the Hydrofoil - from Kowloon side, if I remember correctly... easy day trip! Loads of HK residents go there to gamble in the casino....

We did a week in Beijing one year and a week in HK the next. Bit tiring, but do-able... driving topless in the South of France does sound v-e-r-y tempting though... god, I'd kill for some sun at the moment

last few days in the north east have been sunny....move back up

I know it's not backpacking but a few years ago in Sept I went off to the Canaries on my own to learn how to sail. Was one of the best things I did alone. Got a qualification out of it too, circumnavigated Lanzarote and met some great people. But then I love boats and the sea. Just a thought.

I travel a lot for work. Jumping on a plane for a short break is just a busman's holiday and I don't fancy it much. I have a sabbatical break I can take from next year. 13 weeks paid holiday  That might be time to fly on holiday. Use my airmiles and business class baby!
