Where did you buy your all black kidney grills?

Buy some vinyl sheet from ebay and wrap your existing ones. You can do it for around £5 and looks just as good.

Hey...

Not sure if they are any good (and it depends on which model Z4 you have) - but this guy tends to have quite a few BM grills for sale on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330466518979&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_527wt_905

They are definitely cheaper than buying direct from BMW but not sure on the quality?! I am thinking of getting some matt black ones for my new E89 zed...

Cheers,

Ames x :driving:

Has anyone tried just spraying them with black?

In was thinking of sanding them down then matt black in the spray booth...

I have those grills from that exact seller on my roadster. The quality is really good and the guy is a pleasure to deal with

thanks for the replies guys..

srhutch - have you wrapped stuff before and if so is there much to it? I havent and wouldnt know where to start.

littleone - I spotted them last night on ebay - they look good

richardg - they look good too and are a fair bit cheaper - could you get back to me when you get them and let me know what they are like - quality wise etc? would buy them if the quality was good.

The grills arrived today from Germany (I'd missed that) so about 72 hrs from order to delivery, they are a matt finish rather than the satin/gloss finish of my existing ones but they look spot on quality wise, I can't see any difference in construction or design between these and OEM.
I have only offered them up so far, as as easy as it is to fit them I am not yet ready to do so.

yes roughed up chrome, applies etching fluid and sprayed but it still chipped off.

Hence wrapping, which has been 100% so far

No never wrapped anything before. I tried with tape first but the corners were to tight and gave up. But using a sheet is so much easier just applied heat with fingers and thumbs to massage the vinyl etc.

It's an easy job and well worth a go for £5.25

thanks for the info hutch. will take a look into wrapping here.

Thanks for the ebay link. Unrelated subject but been thinking of wrapping my interior door pulls as they are starting to look a bit chipped and tatty. Was thinking of matt black as it will go with my //M steering wheel.

A lot of people here in the US have used something called plasti-dip to good effect.
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=plasti-dip&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=850612820103305021&sa=X&ei=6a25TbLIFcXbiAKTwK0q&ved=0CG4Q8wIwAw#

I've heard it being used on everything from interior pieces to grills to entire wheels. I've heard pretty positive feedback about it too. Put 2-3 coats of this on the grills. It is very chip-resistant because it's rubberized, and has the added benefit of being very easy to remove if you want to backtrack. You just peel it off. That's how I'll be doing my grills.

intresting, you reallly think it will work with a oem type finish?

I sprayed mine ! Rubbed them down with scotch bright & 1 can of matt black paint , job a goodin ! been on the car 4 months a couple of chips but have some spare paint & can toutch them up ! cost £5.

I can't speak from personal experience yet. I've been told it's got a flat black appearance. Here are a couple of YT vids. The first shows wheels that have been coated after 8 months' usage, and the second shows plastidip removal. Both give an example of the type of finish.

I'd say that for the purposes of covering the chrome on stock grills, plastidip seems like a good solution.

And here's another link of someone who did the grill on their new Nissan. Looks like a nice finish to me.

The things that make plastidip the better option to me:
- better chip/flake resistance than regular paint
- requires zero prep
- simple to undo, just peel off
- cheap

I ordered these... and right now they are like 50% off. Got them installed, they match up to the ones I took out perfectly.

edit: sorry just realized you are not in the US... they may be too much once shipping hits.
