When to use DTC button?

My car is parked in an underground car parking space that has a short, steep hill to exit and today in the rain I had a bit of wheel spin, would this be a time to use DTC or is it just for snow? I am right that DSC is on all the time and DTC is off until you press the button and turn it on aren't I? :thumbsup:
 
Nope, it's the opposite! If you press the button the wheelspin will be a thing to behold :o
A quick press allows more spin (still limited) and leaves dsc active, a longer press turns it all off & puts you through the hedge :cry:

As above - Mine is always "half off" unless it's bucketing down.. Nothing like a little power wiggle out of a bend/corner :)

Yep, I experienced a "power wiggle out of a bend" and over steered straight into a tree, that was pretty exciting :o

Different for different models I suspect. but I switch it off when I feel like concentrating and having fun. :driving: and for sure in the ///M when it's lit it's all off. :D

Okkkay I think I'll leave the buttons alone then, don't want to be going thru no hedges. I'm suprised I was getting any wheelspin at all then if it was on full, it must be a nightmare in a 600bhp rear wheel drive super car! Glad I live in Cornwall and not oop north with all that snow and ice :thumbsup: :driving:
 
Oh for crying out loud, you bunch of girls blouses!

Dtc effectively acts as a very primitive form of e-diff - ie. When DTC mode is enabled it uses the rear brakes and moderates the throttle slightly to give you better traction. It does maintain a level of nannying though so if you really are ham-fisted it does intervene and bring you back straight. It's the best mode to be in with a car with an open diff, as with everything fully off you get very scrappy oversteer which cannot easily managed with the throttle. In a car with a lsd you will find the dtc mode will ultimately hold you back from really playing with the cars balance but you do have to know what you're doing a bit more to drive with everything fully off...

Bottom line though - unless you already had a date with the hedge through going to fast in the first place, having Dtc on or off will make very little difference at all!

I have basicly never touched the button, but ive managed to loose traction completly on the rear tires a couple of times.
However my car is fitted with a quafie diff, could this effect the stabilitly control somehow?
First time was when i had only owned the car for about 2weeks and i was perhaps a bit to heavy on the gas when turning right in rain, causing the car to almost spin..
However i did expect the traction and stability control to be more active, since this is the kind of things they should be helping the driver with..
 
They can only help in certain situations, if you attempt a hairpin bend at 80mph you're still going through the hedge, similar to your experience with turning right in the wet with to much right foot-once it starts to spin and rotate it's not easy to arrest the movement :o

sure, the diff keeps the wheels spinning at the same speed, even if one loses traction (as opposed to the open diff normally fitted). traction controll won't notice the loss of grip (because the same speed of both wheels) so doesn't retract power. ergo: bigger, much bigger slides from the rear. it will however notice a speed difference between front & rear, so it will work when slipping at a standing start

the traction control on a STANDARD Z4 is actually quite sensitive. triggers to fast for my taste.. time for a quaffe diff for me

Did you know you can partially disable the tc to give you more spin before it intervenes?

As said by Mr bear - in the dry the limit is higher so sharp throttle or steering inputs can be more easily managed as there is more grip for the stability control to work with. It can work out when you've bashed the throttle and start to pull torque requested, and modulate the rear brakes to reduce the effect of the input long before the car starts to rotate.

In the wet that same time period between input and stability control intervention, the car is already starting to rotate and there's much less grip so you can have more of a moment in the wet.

A limited slip diff will give you more of a window to play with slip angle wise, but I don't believe it should affect the drive much with the tc fully on?

sure! on the nurburgring i prefer to completely turn it off, that way i can feel much better what the car is doing.
