When to fill up

Basically what I want to know is, when is the latest you can fill up with fuel without it having negative effects (any problems caused by running an empty tank).
I usually fill up when the fuel light comes on but a friend of mine says do it at quarter!

In this day and age I don't think it matters. The pickup has to be at the bottom of the tank if you think about it. That along with the fuel filters will remove and crap. Tanks also being plastic these days help.

My mileage to empty counted down to zero the other day and I drove about 5 miles before I could fill up. Trust your computer it's all good

Remember the car has a fuel filter for a reason

yeah i tend to fill up when i get that awkward juddery feel and your arse puckers up at the thought of stopping on the motorway. there is some sort of light on the dash but i though that was just indicator that you need to drive faster to get to a petrol station... :D

usually with about 50 miles or so on the readout...

I'm one of the people that think letting the tank go too low can't be good for the car...

+1 - although that sort of thinking may be age-related :oldman:

Unless I'm going on a long journey, I tend to fill up whenever the tank is below half-full and I'm passing a garage that does V-Power or other suitable high-octane juice.

Anything below a quarter and I'm passing a station that I like to use.......

Would never play fuel light bingo and have zero sympathy for anyone who runs out.......

When a Z4 3.0 si reads zero range left it still has 5 litres of fuel in reserve. Don't know if its the same with other Z's?

Indeed Gramps... I had a few cars with carbs too!

:poke:

I've gave up looking for Sheel garages near me... there are 2 close to me going by their web page and "up to date app" but both have been sold off! :headbang:

I'm back to BP ultimate... not as good :(

I believe most modern cars still actually have fuel in them at zero range... maybe not as much as 5 litres, but still something...

knowing there are more than 14 miles under the zero means I fill it up when it is approaching empty on the dash.

A couple of times I've done a a fair distance beyond 0miles showing on the trip and still only got 53Litres in to the brim. I don't make a habbit of fuel roulette though, wouldn't want to be the idiot who runs out before finding some V-Power.

Even supermarket unleaded is preferable to running out...

On some cars I've seen that the fuel pump is submerged in the fuel to cool it (obviously electrically isolated!). When the fuel gets low the pump can over heat in extreme temps / use. Repeat over the years and it's not kind to the pump.

For this reason I aim to fill up at around a 1/4 tank remaining. I don't know if this is true on the zed for fact, maybe someone with more knowledge can confirm.
Being in England with the balmy temperature I reckon that this is overkill though, but hey, it's easy anyway.
