When looking for my Zed, I almost bought a.........

Hey all,

When looking for my ///M Coupe last year I looked at a number of other cars (non ///M, non Zed, non BMW) and although we all have Zeds here I'm just curious as to what we could have been driving.......

So to start off, I'll tell you about one car I went to see and test drive before eventually deciding to go with my lovely ///M......

Wait for it........................................................... it was this..........

I know, I know, they don't compare on class in anyway but I went to see a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X FQ-300 SST. At just under 300 bph it's 4-cylinder turbocharged engine is attached to a twin-clutch flappy paddle short-shift-transmission, can seat three more people than our Zeds and is a rally-bread lunatic. So here the story gets interesting....

For a car registered in March 2011, by July 2012 it had had 5 owners and done just under 6k. The dealer stated it was standard but one of the first things I noticed was a corroded aftermarket exhaust and an FQ-330 badge on the back (which surprised me as it was definately an FQ-300.....)

When test-driving it one wet Sunday morning through the B-roads of the New Forest I noticed the distinct smell of burnt clutch for the whole journey......now this could have been my driving style, or perhaps me getting used to a semi-auto for the first time but I've never done it with the Zed........The dealer's response was 'these cars can take it ha ha'. That aside the Evo X was blisteringly quick and when you're driving a turbo you certainly know about it!

So when poking around the car looking for the VIN number I eventually found it not on the windscreen but underneath the driver's seat.....It looked as though the metal had been treated with acid or another corrosive compound as the colour was lighter around the number itself. This could well be part of the normal process for marking chassis but with this, the 5 owners in a seriously short amount of time, the smell of burnt clutch in the morning, the undeclared rusty aftermarket exhaust, the FQ-330 badge on the back of an FQ-300 and the dealer telling me that in the past they've taken on part-exchanges with complete engine failures, all led me to walk away from what I can only describe as a lemon.........

I think I had a lucky escape :o

So any similar stories? Please tell us all what you almost bought when looking for your Zed!

No doubt at all that you made the right decision. The Z outclasses it in every way (except for the lack of seats).

In an auto - even a semi-auto - it is not really possible for your driving style to bugger the clutch... At least I don't think so. And a smell of burning clutch is not the smell of the car 'taking it', it's wounded

Lucky escape.

When I was looking for my Z I was very single minded - I was only looking for a Z :D

ChrisC85, One passenger more than often enough anyway!!

Bing, Well double the clutch probably meant double the trouble (and expense!!) Committed to the Zed you are!

GreyZed, ha ha ha!

I was looking at a second hand 911 but could not convince myself. I was concerned that buying a second hand car with 1 year warranty and being 3 years old could be a lot more expensive in the long term than buying a new Z with 3 years warranty.

Lotus Elise..(yes I know what you are all going to say...I know what LOTUS stands for)
Loved the test drive, was a lot of fun..but car was just too bare inside and I figured I couldn't get my make up bag etc in the boot if I went away for a weekend.

Jamie - dont beat yourself up mate. The Evo X is a lot of car. Slightly OTT in the looks dept but beats a Scooby in my opinion. Got taken around Bedford Autodrome in one of these at launch for release of a film I was working on. Sat in the back with a reporter from the Sun and dont think we sat upright or stopped laughing the entire trip

I don't know about the UK but insurance for a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo on this side of the pond is eye opening..... :o

pvr, there's just something about the sound of a 911 engine that doesn't match-up to the ///M........

What DOES Lotus stand for :?

RubyBlueZ4MC, he he.

inkey$, bet that was a right laugh!

So peeps - what was it, if it wasn't your Zed?

350z or Boxster.

So glad I chose the Zed instead.

I think that if every Z on the planet exploded, or for some reason BMW banned me from having one, I would go the Nissan route - 370Z

Nothing really for either Zed. Maybe a Boxster but couldn't get over the looks (although the new one is far, far better looking than the previous versions).

Next time I change it will be a much harder decision.

I looked at a cat c zed. And I am not sure if I can admit this openly......

Ok if you promise not to laugh.....

Can't believe I am going to admit this. I did have plans to supper charge it.....

350z was also on the cards - one of my friends is always saying 'if it ain't Jap, it's crap!!' but I keep trying to show her the error of her ways........

I eat Boxters for breakfast........
