When is a soft top of a convertible not part of the car

Just checked car insurance booklet, states rear windscreen glass or otherwise and the roof are not covered. How do you insure soft top?
 
If the rear screen is broken on a Z4 with a soft top you need a whole new hood. You can't just replace the glass. So that's 1,200 notes at least...BMW would charge over 2 grand. I'm not sure you can actually insure the hood... But then if it needs replaced its either vandalism, accidental damage... Or more likely the car is upside down and you have a whole lot more to worry about. Maybe they are uninsurable because so many get vandalised ?
 
Interesting point, something that I hadn't considered. Might just check with Aviva tomorrow but suspect what Bing says is true.
 
You might want to check that the car itself is insured if left with the hood down, even if locked, and it is stolen. Certainly your contents won't be insured, and even if it's up and is broken into I think a lot of policies limit the personal effects cover.
 
Just checked my policy, and it excludes "Repair or replacement of the hood/roof structure of a convertible or cabriolet vehicle", and loss or damage if any "window, roof opening roof panel or hood is left open or unlocked". :cry:
 
Just checked my Admiral policy and under Windscreen cover they wont pay for:

for the replacement of the hood/roof structure of a convertible car when the glass is
not repairable

So you just need to hope the scrotes slash the roof as well as it appears they will pay for this.

WTF I am with Admiral hope my glass never breaks if so
 
I'm with Aviva and my policy under the section 'Glass' - only refers to 'windscreen'.
There is no mention of either the side windows or the rear.
Fear the worst and will need to get clarified.
 
Response from Aviva seemingly saying that all the glass is covered, they don't specifically mention the rear windscreen, hope I don't have to put it the test.
