When a sunny day turns into a lucky day

Not the best outcome to a Bank Holiday drive. Driving downs a A road doing about 40mph when a hay lorry passes me on the other side of the road, massive thud & this is the outcome.
Feel very lucky nobody was injured, I dread to think what would have been the outcome if a fraction of a second earlier.
By time I managed to turn round the lorry was well gone.

Holly poo mate, that's bad luck and very lucky, as you say. Has it knocked the A pillar out, have you tried shutting the roof yet ??

What hit it?
Was it a hay bale?
If it was I hope you reported it to the police as they obviously had an unsecure load.

I think the A pilar is fine looks like it’s just deformed the rubber trim a little, fingers crossed I’ll know more when the window fitter comes out.

Not 100% sure what hit it, it definitely came of the top of the hay lorry though, think I may have glimpsed a piece of timber in my rear view mirror.

Wow - that's scary! :o

Just lucky whatever it was hit the screen rather than the car, or god forbid anyone in it.

Hope you get it sorted OK.

I was also a victim of stuff detaching some years ago and know how you feel .
Take some solace tho, I had the family and my outlaws in the car which ended up in a ditch and on its roof in the dark.

Good and bad timing. :o That could have been so much worse. Good you and the Zed are pretty much fine.

Wow, could have been so much worse, glad you are ok. I’d definitely be reporting that to the Police, just in case they can get any camera footage.

WTF! Glad you're ok. That's unfortunate but soooo lucky too. A testement to the robust structure of the car. Hope you get it back on the road soon.

That's terrible, but could have been much worse. I always look at lorries with straw bales and cars with bikes attached with some suspicion. The other classic is an uncovered truck on the way to the tip.

Thanks for the comments, You call it either bad luck that it hit the car in the first place or exceptional good luck that it didn't hit my wife in the passenger seat, when you consider at 40mph your covering 56 feet a second I know which way I'm thinking.

Crikey, that’s shocking! Glad you’re ok and as you say, cars can be fixed more easily than people.

A few months ago my daughter was following a truck in her car when something came off it and damaged her car. Fortunately she had a dash cam so she sent the footage to the Police and also contacted the company that owned the truck. Their response was to say, oh, this happens all the time, send us the bill for the damage and we’ll pay. However, a week or two later they withdrew that offer after they received a notice of prosecution from the Police. They obviously didn’t like being dobbed in but hopefully it might get them to change their attitude and sharpen up their safety practices!

The worse things are tipper trucks, these can get large stones of even bricks stuck between the rear sets of drive wheels (seen it a few times) Once on the open road, it's only a matter of time before this missile is thrown out at speed. I never follow those bloody things on the road
You only have to look on the side of the road to see all the debris that comes off of vehicles, its a battlefield out there people

Very lucky escape & lived to tell the tale... interweb’s littered with inpailing stories

Fingers x just a new windscreen & washing powder for pants

Gosh that could have been a real tragedy! Never really thought I would want a dash cam, but listening to the tales here, and remembering years ago when I was hit by the metal wheel falling from a container lorry is making me think again.
Just come back from a quick mooch around on the motorbike, wouldn't fancy my chanes at all if that hit me!
Glad you are ok, though it must have been a shock.
