i posted way back about my SMG gearbox giving me problems.......when coming to a holt , be it a junction , roundabout, traffic lights etc....it decides to shift out of gear and go into Neutral (giving out a warning beep ) and wont budge into any gear , unless you switch your engine off for a while ( several minutes ) turn it on , and all is back as normal, very embarrassing when you are holding the queue up. All you good people from here gave me possible explainations as to why it was doing that. its only done this 6 times in the 6 months i have had the car but its starting to do my head in every time i come to a holt ( are you or arn't you ) So i took it in for a diagnostic , it only came up with 1 fault.....GEARBOX :headbang: and apparently diagnostics said my car is a SSG (Sports Sequential Gearbox) originating from Alfa Romeo !!! and not a SMG :o .....also i have a sneaky feeling it was up for sale because of the gears . :(

Feck. Someone tried to fix it on the cheap and failed ? Got a warranty ?

Can't find your original post, so sorry if these scenarios have been mentioned. I've had similar happen twice. First time was when last May when I didn't shut the driver door properly after getting out to stretch my legs whilst queuing at a ferry terminal. The other time was yesterday. I picked up a portable TV and put it on the passenger seat. Set off and the seatbelt warning beep started. I stopped to connect the seatbelt and then it wouldn't go into gear until I turned the ignition off and then start again. I didn't have to wait though and at the ferry terminal it did go into gear and drive but went back to neutral and beeped as soon as I touched the brake.

Sorry to hear you're having troubles - the SSG thing is correct - apparently the internal name or something at BMW for this box was SSG - but marketed under SMG - it is the same / proper box you have though.

Sorry can't help with your specific problem - I do know that a weak battery can play tricks on the sensors though - fortunately I've had no such issues with mine - though still only done 32k miles. Good luck !

The early brochures called it SSG as it was called in the E46 330. I think SMG has stuck as a name because of the SMG II in the E46 M3.
