Wheels & Tyres

Hi, I am a 'newbie' currently considering the purchase of a 35is. All looks OK to me but I have heard some horror stories about the RFTs and was looking for some advice as to whether it is sensible to go for the 19" wheels or stick with the standard 18" rims due to the over harsh ride the 19" might serve up. Any help and advice appreciated.

Personally,i would go for some non-rft's,and that way its pretty good on both 18s and 19s. my mate test drove 2 335i (i know its a difrnt car, before any1 says, lol),but the ride on a std 335 with rft's was worse the the 335 with lowered suspension(dealer demo car too),and upgraded bm 19s with non runflats.
:) :driving:

The 19s look great but I think I would stick to the 18s if it was me. The rears on the 19s are 30 profile which is too low I reckon.

Welcome. The only 19" wheel I would consider is BMW Performance 313. Tyres are more expensive for 19", and the potholes on the roads may crack the wheels.

The 313s are nice too but they are ridiculously expensive and cast not forged, haven't heard of any cracking though so they might be Ok. I'd go aftermarket for 19s if I wanted them.

Welcome to the Forum - all personal choice really but 18" with a good set of non rft's for me

Thanks for the replies. Firstly I'm looking at the 326M rims - similar to 313s which aren't available as an option for the Z4 - as I just don't like the 18" rims currently available for the Z4. Secondly, how does one pursuade a dealer to provide non RFTs?

313s are a dealer fit option so you'd have to get it on the original 18s then sell them. BMW won't supply you without run flats, again you'd have to sell them on after delivery.

Thanks again. Looks like I'll have to 'suck it and see' on the 19" rims (which do look very good) and then get shot of the tyres later on if they're no good! I'm assuming non RFTs will fit on the rims?

Best 19" wheel IMO

I don't think RFT causes any problem on E89. My previous E85 with M Sport suspension and RFT was different story.

Both my E89's had 19's on rfts. No issue at all. Best to drive a car with these tyres on and make your own mind up.

Just be aware that the 19's option are different sizes front and rear.

I'm currently after a wheel to use as a spare all round (anything as long as it fits) A large stone has hit my front wheel and put a gash in it.

Would be nice just to swap for a spare and drop the wheel in for a refurb rather than leave the car for a day or if I need a new tyre and they are out of stock.

If your talking widths, so are the 18's.

I like the stock 19's looks wise. Not a fan of the M Sport ones. 18's are more piratical. More tyre wall (and on the UK roads, you need that!) and less expensive.
I have the 18 split rim style on mine. Was thinking of upgrading to 19's but the roads I mainly travel are are just too bad! Also the OEM 19'S are so expensive!

I have these in 19"

Saw another Havana today in Perth it was on 18 s and didn't look that great

Nice. What else you getting?
sDrive 35iS in Melbourne Red with the following options:-
- Pure white design package
- Adaptive headlights
- Cruise control
- Heated seats
- Lumbar support
- Auto folding/dimming mirrors
- Wind deflector
- Windscreen shade band
- Comfort access
- Professional multimedia satnav system
- Professional loudspeaker system
- Connectivity package
- and, of course, the 19" dual spoke rims

Have to vote in favor of the 313's if you go with 19"s. Yes they are cast, but using the low pressure casting method [vice gravity cast], and the outer rim is rolled which gives the strength of a forged wheel, but does cost a bit less to make. The other BMW wheels are pretty much all low pressure cast, but not rolled, hence the lower price, but I have yet to hear [touch wood] of any 313 cracking issues.
