Wheels & Tyres Quote

I know I know... not another thread about wheels and tyres....

Just thought Id share with you all the laughable quote I got from my dealer.. ahem sorry stealer ..earlier.

My 108s are fairly badly damaged and have started to corrode. Quotes for refurbishment have been frankly too expensive to get them right compared to some new wheel and tyres packages you see advertised. The time has now come for me to replace all 4 tyres so thought Id replace my the wheels at the same time and go for a one piece wheel such as the 107s design. Called BMW to get a price:

Wheels only: £460 for the fronts, £470 for the rears so £930 total - not too bad i thought
Wheels and Tyres: £2635 + £75 Fitting :o

Now by my calculations either they got that wrong or they are trying to charge me £1705 for tyres alone! averages out at £426ish per tyre. Now I know the run flats are expensive but really?

Tried a local tyre fitter for the tyres and I can get the same tyres for £765 Fitted, so what gives :?

Anyway rant over :)

Any thoughts?!

What tyres are you getting prices for, I have spent the last few days finding out what the dealer prices are on the re050a RFTs in 18" fitment and also the michelin PS2 ZP RFT... needless to say they are quite a lot more than a normal tyre fitter charges.

They were the standard bridgestone potenza's (RE050A I think).

I am gonna double check with them the price though cos that's just way over the top. Can't imagine why anyone would pay that much more...

If that is correct Ill get the wheels from them and tyres elsewhere :)

GOOD GRIEF! Thats $5300.00 U.S.! :o You could buy two used Miatas for that and wear one on each foot!
That's just wrong! They don't call them stealers for nothing!

I only paid $2600.00 for 17" style 71's (OEM, not reps) with Goodyear F1 GS-D3's AND a compact spare from Roadster Solutions!

I called again a little earlier thinking Id got the price for the wheels alone wrong - maybes £460 each front & £470 each rear - but no :o

Apparently - though i dont believe it - Bridgestone BMW tyres are different to those that you get from tyre shops and are manufactured to BMW spec so cost more... but even so ouch!

Mate, why don't you refurb the 108's yourself, sounds daft ???, if we are talking just the outer alloy lip it's easy i promise. When i bought my car the 108's were shafted with kerb damage and corrosion, stupid quotes for refurb much the same as you i assume so i took it on my self.

1., mask the painted star of the wheel really well then use paint stripper to remove the laquer.
2. using a needle file or courser if needed, file out all the kerbing damage, the alloy is really soft this is easy to do.
3. now this is what take the time, you start using wet and dry paper to polish out all the imperfections from the corrosion and what the filing has left, wotk your way from 400 grade down to 1200 with some fairy liquid. Once you have a decent surface a good polish with Autosol and the come up mint, in fact alot brighter and more shiny than the OEM finish.

There is one down side to the whole affair in that you have to keep ontop of the alloy with a quick polish twice a week.......

In total i did mine over a weekend but i love this wheel and it was time well spent, they look mint...

cool, fancy a job plowy :P

Seriously I just dont possess the skills for doing this myself :(
I wish that if I could guarantee that the wheels could be refurbished and then not re-corrode as is reported loads of times, I would get them refurbished, but I dont wanna pay loads for a refurb only to have them corrode again...

think Ill be better off in the long run with one piece wheels. Please anybody feel free to persuade me otherwise

Yep Plowy thats what im going to do. I love the 108s and the effort will be well worth it 8) .
Can you not spray laquer over after you've finished so that polishing isn't needed?

Also im confused as to why you would want to keep the run-flats, they do my head in! :(

I dont find the run flats too bad generally, just over really rough stuff, for some reason my wife likes the ride as it is  Looking into the newer Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 ZP which are also run flats and are supposed to be much better than the stock bridgestones in terms of ride comfort and other areas. Only slightly more expensive than the Bridgestones from 'best buy tyres' (£765 plays £808 fitted)... Rest assured I won't be paying BMW's rather extortionate prices :)

Are you sure that the wheel price isn't per wheel, that would make more sense with the total being £2635? Ah, just noticed you said no? I'd double check, I know an Audi TT wheel is around £400.

As you saw wondermike I had a similar thought so triple checked with the dealer and the wheels are about £200+VAT each. That's when they gave me the BS about them being BMW spec Bridgestones, also gave me some c**p about the sets including the new centre caps - like that makes such a difference

LOL what a bunch of muppets, new centre caps must be £200 apiece for it to add up. And the tyres are exactly the same as you buy from anywhere else

£1169 for Genuine 107's with 225 and 255 tyres

Just slightly cheaper than the stealer

Thats an insane price for the tyres and BS from the dealer. Such blatant lies would seriously warrant a complaint IMO. I had a tyre place sign and shake their heads, trying to tell me I could not put non RFTs on an E92 318D M Sport. Even though it had on RFTs already, parked in front of them! I went mad.

I would bin them for proper tyres though and save yourself a fortune. RFTs make no sense:

Harder Ride
Most places won't repair damage that would be perfectly fixable on a 'normal' tyre
Twice the price

So the only benefit is being able to drive it, flat, to a tyre shop. Expensive solution IMO!

Thanks, I had seen this website from another post and I agree the prices look very competitive, I sent them an email asking some questions and got no reply. Phoned them and they found the email and told me more about the deal. I was also asking them about refurb, they said to email them the pictures and they would get back to me. Ive heard nothing since :(

Question is do I really want to deal with a place that doesn't answer potential customer questions - especially as they are an hour away from me? The tyres included in the deal are also a make Ive never heard of (Nexen N3000) which after some further research are labelled as 'Budget' tyres and am a little nervous about that :)

Pretty sure you could upgrade the tyres on that deal or just get the wheels only. The Z4 deserves better tyres than Nexen :)
