Wheels and tyres :(

At the end of the day there are 4 postcard sized bits of rubber keeping you on the road - never skimp on tyres, get those budget ones off as soon as you can, Falkens should do you well :)

Yeah I had no intention of keeping the tyres just happened to be ones on the wheels I liked, just a temporary fix initially. The fronts are 8" and rears are 8.5" just like my other wheels. I've got mv2's and csl's. I did post pics in a thread lol,

Think my overall plan is to have my mv2's as my winters though, even though I slightly prefer the silver CSL style with the hardtop :)

Thanks to everyone for their input I have gained much advice from this and will try all options, I know where to return if anything else may arise

Worth also saying that whilst the Z is set up for staggered wheels generally, non sport models came with a square set up I believe. Also, it's set up that way for performance because it's a sports car... But you will not be driving it like one in the winter, so there is not need for wider rear tyres. Whilst I defer to the above poster's considerable experience, if you ask a BMW dealer what the recommended winter set up is they will tell you it is 225/45/17 all round. And I was of the understanding that skinnier tyres are better in the snow than wider ones... If I'm wrong then so be it, but running square 17s on my last Z with winters worked just fine for me. Ugly as sin wheels, but I never had any issues.

Yes it's true, the skinny tyres perform much better in ice, but not always in snow (depends on the type). You can see the rally cars on snow tyres, they have very deep tread and very skinny tyres, quite funny to watch ! But for us mortals I think it really comes down to the tyre technology itself and how the computer handles the power. I saw a really neat video of a Volvo climbing up a steep test incline by "hopping" a few cm at a time, with power to alternate wheels... it was very neat!
